Default Wifi battery usage question

If I'm out of range of my wifi access points, does it save battery to turn my wifi radio off? I mean is the wifi continually searching for a signal, or is it "smart" enough simply to detect a signal when it's within range? TIA.

Default

It's continually scanning so yes, turning it off would save battery power

Default WiFi Manager

You might want to consider getting an app that turns your WiFi on and off on your BB. Check out "WiFi Manger" in App World. After downloading it to your phone you add frequented WiFi hotspots to a list in the app. Turn on your WiFi and relax. The app will turn off the Wifi when you are out of range of the hotspot and turn it back on when you return.

I have this on my Torch. We have a WiFi network at home and I frequent Starbucks at various locations in San Diego. The manager turns the WiFi on and off as I move about. So, I don't use "Data" on my AT&T plan when at a hotspot and I don't have to remember to turn the WiFi on and off on the Torch.
