9780 wifi reconnect problem

I really like my 9780 so far, but I've been having a little problem with the school wifi. I can connect fine at first, but if I leave the coverage area and then go back in the wifi doesn't automatically reconnect to anything. It takes me going into the menu and power cycling the wifi to reconnect.

The problem is that in between buildings there no coverage and it really stinks waiting for a call or a txt just to find out there is no cell service and the UMA didn't kick in.

I've got the preference set to 'wifi preferred' and network selection mode to automatic but that doesn't seem help. I'm running the stock t mobile os. Id appreciated any help you guys could offer.
