Default Palm is running out of $ash. Possible Acquirers RIM

In order to boost sales of the Pre and Pixi, Palm is releasing a new OS which will support Adobe Flash. Is it really going to help them in the long run???? Time will tell

Ken Dulaney, an analyst with Gartner Group (IT), suggested that Research In Motion would be a logical buyer. "RIM has had difficulty with its touchscreen products, something that Palm has done well," Dulaney says. RIM spokeswoman Tenille Kennedy didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

Palm Under Pressure After Sales Shortfall - BusinessWeek
CNet reported this story yesterday. I think it's only a matter of time before Palm ceases to exist as an independent company.

There is a lesson to be learned here. It wasn't that long ago that Palm was sitting on top of the world. They failed to innovate and they failed to keep up with the competition and well look where they are today. About ready to fold.

ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION RIM?

RIM has gotten as arrogant and as slow-moving as Palm. RIM gave us their threaded sms in 5.0. It is just horrible code. Insofar as threaded sms goes, it's buggy and it's a totally lame interface. Then you have the issue that many of us JUST DON'T WANT threaded sms at all. ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION RIM? Did RIM give us an option to turn this goofy threaded sms off? Nope. Now I realize this is just one small issue but it is indeed an overall indictment on RIM. They are not being innovative or customer responsive and if this doesn't change, they could be the Palm of 2015. Again I ask, ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION RIM?

Google is making too many strides into the SmartPhone sector and Apple has stolen too many units from RIM. If RIM doesn't wake up, RIM could be in trouble in the future. There is too much competition out there and the competition is smart, dedicated and aggressive. Things RIM is seemingly not so good at anymore.

Sigh. So, Palm is dying. And one more time I ask ... ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION RIM?

RIM doesn't have the same problems as Palm, not by a long shot...

Also Palm's failure was not simply a failure of innovation. They had failure good success even with their windows mobile line, but then they started releasing devices very far inbetween and had several crappy releases at that...

If RIM doesn't innovate, they'll be a memory by 2015.

Apple and Google aren't sitting still.

I dunno if I'd say Palm will cease to exist. Before every jumps, I'm not saying their doomsday isn't looming! As the trend goes in the telecom industry, someone will buy them out when they are crashing and burning. The OS has potential, but Palm has some mismanagement issues. I guess we'll see, no one really knows how it will work out.

WebOS is a very nice operating system, actually.

As a current Tour owner, a past Pre owner (didn't like the email or keyboard), and someone who has used an iPhone, I have often said why doesn't a company (RIM?) take the best of the BB and merge it with a fantastic OS/browser like WEBOS or Apple? I gotta believe that if RIM did this people would be beating a path to the stores to get their phones. BTW, I love my 9630. I do wish however that the browsing experience was more like the Pre or iPhone (just not enough to give my 9630 up)!

1) They have to cater to a security market that Palm/Apple/etc don't, government etc. Also they have stuff like existing BES customers to worry about backwards compatibility, etc. Not that it's impossible, but it's a lot more work than a revamp for most of the other companies...

2) Even if they used an OS like webOs or iPhone, RIM would probably lock down a lot of the api's.

Webkit browser will be out this year, so the browser situation will be improved.
