Arrow ***Palm Pre Purchase/Pricing Thread*** Love it or Hate it??

I got mine a couple of hours ago and I must say it's nice.

So far I have just been messing with the touchscreen and getting used to it. I have downloaded any apps, but will probably get the Tweed (twitter application).

Who else got their Pre? Love it or hate it?

i went to local sprint to play with it. Its really nice. i did like the size and the form factor. the screen is hugeee and the color is awmezing. i didnt play with the software much but it was really nice to just flip thru the apps and programs. web browsing was good too. cons: the keyboard is just uncool. maybe because i have a blackberry 8900 and the keys are very spacious, but on the Pre felt pretty hindered by the crampines of the keys. i didnt like them very much. maybe i need to spend more time with it and i might like it.

I'm really liking mine so far. Definitely some things about my curve that I miss but I'm thinking that WebOS is going to be adding more features as it develops. The web browser on it combined with the screen size is one of my favorite things about it.

The more I use the pre, the more I like it. It better get tethering soon, else it's going back.

Here are a couple of the top of my head.

Likes
-Screen isn't the biggest, but it's beautiful
-Keypad; I type slower, but with better accuracy. I'm sure I will speed up soon.
-Changeable battery
-Combined Messaging: Threaded Messaging (meaning, IM, SMS and MMS all in one)
-Unlimited Data, Messaging, Navigation, Sprint TV all for $20 extra on a Family Plan.

Dislikes
-Takes forever to charge the battery, even with radio and phone off. Nothing an extra battery can't handle (check Likes)
-Barely any apps (this will come soon enough)

Ok I have two questions Duvi.

1.) What do you mean all of that is $20 extra on a family plan? For example...I was told by a Sprint rep that unlimited data, messaging, navigation and sprint tv for (2) lines (family plan) is $129; and to add a third line to that; is $20...is this what you're referring to?

2.) How is the battery life once the battery is fully charged?

Thank in advance.

OK, on Saturday morning I went to an obscure Radio Shack store and they had the Pre in stock and I bought it! I've waited since January to get this phone in my hands and ditch one of my 2 Blackberry's. the Pearl was the one to go. Here are my very short term impressions and the reasons it's going back!

1. Battery life is horrible. I charged it up Saturday morning to 100% power. By Saturday night I was down to 15%...horrible especially since I didn't go crazy using it!

2. Charging port cover is garbage. It has a cheap plastic cover over the charging port that doesn't even sit flush when you put it in place and is held on by a thin piece of plastic. Unless I buy the Touchstone, I will use this port daily and am sure it will, in short order break off!

3. Web pages look beautiful BUT can't read them!!! They are tiny and completely useless!

4. Feel of the phone is very cheap. My daughters Rumor slide felt tighter than this and I only paid $49 for that phone!

I can honestly say that I have NEVER returned a phone before and have been a cellphone user since the early bag phones were your only portable option but this thing is going back!

How disappointing!

Thank you for the honest and unbiased review.
I doubt we will see many honest reviews on a New device like this.
Since most buyers nose will be in the air about having a new device
(I.E. some storm owners) They all become fanyboys:-P

1- Yes, $20 additional.

2a- I believe it isn't that great. I just got home and it needs to be charged. I have only IMed and Tweeted (light as I have it on the Bold) on it. Went to the catalog and d/led one app. I don't use it for voice or sms. My bold is at 60% and I have been SMSing, Tweeting, voice calls and a couple hundred emails. Oops, I also have BerryWeather updating every 3 hours (checked about 4-5 times) and a little facebooking.

2b- At least you can change the battery, lol.

1- Agreed

2- It sits flush on my device. Maybe it's yours? If it does break off, doesn't it become just like your BlackBerry device's port? I don't think it will, at least if it treat it right.

3- Double tap to zoom? Or tilt the device? It is small, but it is a smaller screen, you are suppose to zoom though.

4- Only way it feels cheap is because it is very light, other than that, it seems pretty good aside from the slippery surface that will probably lead to more drops.

1- Glad we agree!

2- I went to a Sprint store today and looked at another device and it had the same issue. When you look closely, you can see that there is extra plastic on the piece that get's in the way. I am sure I can remove it but pretty poor quality control!!!

3- Agreed but don't like the rendering and also even when zooming, when I need to use a link, I find myself often missing the "EXACT" spot on the phone and having to touch multiple times. Frankly, my trackball does a MUCH BETTER job.

4- I disagree. The slide is not very solid. If you firmly hold the phone in your hands and move your fingers there is some play in the phone. I have never personally used a slider but have played with a few and they have all seemed a lot more solid.

To add a little more to my comments, I wanted to say that this thing is also a finger print magnet. In the few days I've had it, I find myself constantly wanting to wipe it clean.

Lastly, believe me, I wanted to love this phone. I have been eligible for a phone upgrade with Sprint since February and have waited for the Pre and up until using it, was very excited about owning it. Also, I was a Palm junkie for a long time, owning the original Handspring PDA/Phone and ultimately ending up with a couple different Treo models. I have never questioned their quality, I have always been very happy with the quality of the materials and implementation and have always loved using a Palm device......until now.

One more thing.....I am out in the field today and decided to use the Pre instead of my Blackberry Curve to have a real comparison to my normal usage.

As always, I left home at 6am and been using the Pre instead of my Blackberry Curve. I even forwarded all my calls to the Pre to really put it to the test.

It is now 2:40 and my Pre is down to 24% power. I am probably going to have to switch back to my Blackberry before the end of my day to stay in contact with the world. By this time with my Blackberry, I still have well over 50% power and am easily able to make it home without powering down.

Yes, I could buy the touchstone and leave it on my desk to keep the phone always charging......but I shouldn't have to!

I've been playing around a bit more with the pre since I got it and I really like it!...its the best phone I ever had...that said there are some terrible flaws and imperfections it carries but hey don't we all?...there is no perfect phone..so I'm keeping it but heres what I hate about it

Battery life - I'm learning tricks and tweaks to enhance it though...and this battery is improving after a few charge/recharge cycles

Sprint - it truly sux lol!!!...where service is awailable its excellent but that just makes it more irritating when you hit one of the many dead zones!

Copy and paste - only in text fields..no select mode to copy from the web

No fowarding text msgs - this is just retarded I have never heard of a phone that couldn't do this!?!
