| | Palm had a good idea with the Palm Pre ... i got the message
But it all went down the sh**ter when the "idea" was surrounded by such week, plastic looking hardware! The keyboard felt fake as heck... My friend @ the sprint store said "don't get the pre, our return rate is high because it breaks easily"
Rim needs to take this idea of a cool touch screen with a solid keyboard...
Why would palm make such a weak device???

RIM doesn't really "need" a touchscreen + keyboard... It would just be a bonus.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | Don't count on much. RIM likes creating the same devices over and over again with little hardware improvements. If you want something innovative, look elsewhere.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | Well I was a former 8330 owner that switched to the pre after the 8330 broke, and I have to say although the build may not be the best the OS is lightyears beyond anything blackberry, or any other phone maker is making. I could have gone with the 9630 but I was bored with the blackberry design. It really is the same old phone and OS.
Great job Palm!

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I don't think the build quality is poor at all. To hold the Pre in the hand is a great experience. I like it's minimalist design. I have the conductive battery cover on the back to charge with the touchstone. I think that is pretty slick. I like the gesture ball that indicates when you have a message. The screen is amazing. They keyboard isn't that bad. I have gotten used to typing with it over the last two days. The Pre isn't the best on the block, but for a 1st generation device, I am really impressed with Palm's effort. I used to knock the Pre until I used one.

It has a fairly good design, but there are definitely issues. There are so many reports of touchscreen failure and cracking it's not even funny... A lot of people believe heat is the culprit, which implies there might be some design failures on the internals...
The USB port is horribly designed, so badly that a lot of people think Palm did it on purpose to sell more Touchstones. Also the way you remove the usb cord stresses the slider, which on the non plus Pre was not very strong to begin with...

I haven't experienced those things obviously because I have only had my device for 2 days. So far so good lol. It's under warranty if I have any problems. I didn't really do any research before I got the device. I actually got it as a second thought. I played around with it in the store and thought that it was interesting. Glad I got it. Hopefully, I have better luck than some of the others.

Yeah, not everyone has the issue, but if you read the threads on PreCentral, there are a lot of cases....
Also a huge number of failures on the Touchstone as well.

I just returned my palm pre for my bold 9700. I LOVE WebOS. It has great refinement, the multitasking is amazing, and while there isn't a ton of software support yet it's getting better. I returned it both because I felt the build quality was nowhere up to par (I felt like if I squeezed too hard it would break), the battery life was AWFUL (worse than my G1 when I first tried it out. BAD), plus palm is having some issues right now and I'm not sure if they're gonna make it. I hope they do, as I would definitely be up for trying a webOS phone in the future.

Yeah, I've seen tons of people complain about the build quality, but I'd be willing to deal with it for webOS. It looks amazing and would definitely work well for the things I do. I'm not too much of a heavy user so I shouldn't have any problems keeping it alive throughout the day.

If you are in an area with kinda weak signal it's hard to get it to last all day even with minimal usage...
If you have strong signal all day you might be ok, just to give you some idea how bad the battery really is.

There aren't really "more" options now... WM platform is hardly releasing anything (until WM7, but that's taken about a year so far and hasn't even started yet. There were a ton of manufacturers releasing WM phones before...), Palm is only releasing one platform now instead of two and with a low adoption rate and for almost the last year it was only on one carrier, symbian releases have definitely slowed down, none of the new Nokia platforms have really taken off yet and Android is basically getting started building a marketshare at this point.
