Some people know about this, lots do not:

You can get your vodafone UK blackberry unlocked for free by Vodafone. Vodafones guidelines say that you are allowed to get the unlock code for free from them if you're on contract (one unlock code per nember on you account). Note: this does not work on Storm 9500, I'm unsure about 9520.

This will work for any phone you have on contract from Vodafone. If you bought a phone on pay-as-you go and proove that it's atleat 1 year only you can also get the unlock code for free.

Vodafone store have access to the part of the unlock data base so might be able to unlock it in-store. Sometimes unlock codes have to be requested.
If vodafone cannot obtain an unlock code then they may cedit your account you the fee charged by a 3rd party unlocker, but this is at the discression of the advisor.

Hope this infomation is of use to someone.

I had my Pearl unlocked this way and it was very easy and free. I have a Storm 2 now, but I have not queried about a NUC for the 9520.
