Default Replace dumb phone with 9650

I'm a newbie, so please be gentle.
I'd like to replace my current lg cosmos with a used unlocked BB 9650 bold. I just want to use it as a phone and to text, not email and maybe wifi. Would anyone know if this is possible, since I don't want to add a data plan to my service. Also, could the phone be from another provider, other than verizon, if it's unlocked?

Thank you so much for the help.

You have to add the data plan, as soon as u activate your data plan will be activated it. Theirs no way around it.

Bold 9650 requires a data plan. VZW won't allow it on the network without one.

It also HAS to be a Verizon branded 9650.

Red face

You won't be able to text without a data plan either.

This is incorrect. SMS uses the voice channel. It does not require data.

But it's a moot point on Verizon because as noted above, a data plan is required on a BlackBerry.
