See this article:

Could it be true?
Also, sorry if this has already been posted.......... - 10-09-2008, 03:54 PM #2
I read it had vznav on it, which would indicated a locked down gps.

It does say VZNav... but that does not mean the GPS is locked and only available for use on that app! Technically, you should be able to load a third party GPS app (if the rumor that the GPS is unlocked is true).
Hopefully VZW will realize that they are greedy SOBs asking for $$ every chance they can! Next thing you know, they will be charging for Visual Voicemail (which is a good possibility! I heard they were going to charge around $3/month for it).

I said I was sorry....I just wasn't sure into which forum it should go.
Didn't want to make anyone upset. I moderate a large board myself (15,000 members) and understand the idea behind cross-posting.
Again, sorry. - 10-09-2008, 07:48 PM #7
Don't apologize. Not everyone reads every single thread in all the forums.

I wonder if they will unlock it for all BlackBerry 's once the Storm launches?

Along the same lines of another thread... they'll wait (possibly forever), so that the general public will see the Storm as the only Blackberry with unlocked GPS. Users for whom the locked GPS is a real issue (worth upgrading over) will upgrade. Only after that pool (of users) has been depleted will the consider unlocking it for older models.

It doesn't work like that. It's either fully unlocked or locked down to apps which need to push the appropriate PDE info to the phone before it'll work. With the introduction of OS4.5, the PDE calls for the Location API have also added the need for the application to be signed. This means that the app must have a valid signature by a licensed RIM developer.
