Smile To anyone who hates Bing

I got my Storm2 yesterday, knowing I would be stuck with Bing. Personally I hate this, and I will never search through Bing on my phone (probably not on computer either). Just out of sheer principle.

Anyways, since there's no way to get rid of Bing...I made my own local homepage. It's simple, but it works. All you have to do it save it on your card or memory, then set your homepage to it. It's not perfect, but it works for me, and it could work for you too. So, I figured I'd share it. On a side note, the form's action goes to a php script that instantly redirects to the search page for Google or Wikipedia. I attached the HTML (I'm not a pro, but it works), and a few screens and the gradient I used.

And I'm sure this will come up...why don't I just use Opera Mini? Well, I do. But I prefer the native browser when it comes to mobile websites...it's more intuitive imo.

All you have to do is get some images for your websites you want in your bookmarks and save them with the webpages. Then change the image names and URLs and you're set!

Yeah, that's doable, but I prefer to be able to go to URLs there too. I did originally set my home page to Google before i made this.

I love Verizon but there are things I am not happy about and Bing is one of them.
I don't like Internet Explorer either. I have Mozilla Firefox works better than IE
My Tour still has Google and not showing Bing as search. But the BB still has the Bing icon on it. I know they have a contract with Bing, but they still should give us the choice. I know the Tour is still the only device not requiring Bing being used.
I also don't like how they push icons onto the device and can't delete them, only can hide them. I would like to choose if I want something on my device and my email to them did no good. They even told me if they were to delete an icon that has been pushed, it would be resent anyways. I have been with them for a long time and if they weren't the best I might consider leaving. But they are the best so I put up with this crap. HA ! I like google don't like Bing

I just use Opera Mini instead of the native browser. It has a native search of Google too. Much faster and stuff, so go for that one if you haven't tried it.

When I need to search, I use the Google Mobile app. Google doesn't officially have a version for touch BBs, even though they've been around for over a year now (*sigh*), but you can get it at the link below.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I had a similar solution on my Palm Treo 755P (back in the day) and wondered if it could be recreated on a BB. You are kind of creating your own "opera speed dial".

Keep in mind that you can personalize this as much as you want...you could create it to link to your personal bank accounts, forums, etc. Sure you can also use bookmarks but it is nice having everything right there at once.

I'll play with this at some point because I want to do this on my bb. I really appreciate you sharing it with us.

Google has a touch version. Just use firefox as your browser on your device when going to the download page. Works for all google mobile apps

The only thing I use BING for is for directions. I like how you can speak and get directions from where you are and want to go. That is pretty sweet. I usually use google to get my addy first though if I don't already know it.

Look at it this way: the government has just passed health care "reform", despite the fact that polls have consistently shown the American people didn't want it to pass (as written--obviously, everyone likes PORTIONS of the bill). This high handed, "we know what's best for the people" attitude is what rankles the average American. Verizon foisting Bing as a search engine instead of making it an OPTION is what pisses people off. GET IT???

Sorry for the delayed response. Yeah, all of my images and the HTML file are in a folder in the root of my SD card. Glad you ended up getting it working! I tried to keep it small & simple, because that's such a hard task for the BB browser :P

I'm working on making a little web-based one where you can choose your own search engines and add bookmarks and such, then sends you the files. (Maybe make a web based one for the browser, too...not too sure, because it needs to be fast.)

Glad you like it! Everyone else is a ****...haha.

I agree with using the Google Mobile App (availalbe from the BB App Store). It's much faster than setting Google as your home page and easy to use. I really do dislike Bing (putting all prejudice aside) and refuse to use it.

The "principles" might vary from user to user. For some, the "principle" might be simply because they detest all things Microsoft. Others may object because it was foisted upon them as the ONLY choice, removing what we had before, which was options. It's one thing to say "ok, we have a deal with so and so and we're now going to make this an option to everyone." Fine, no problem, just leave me choices. For me, I've been using Google since almost day 1 (before that, it was Altavista, lol) on my computer. Over the years, Google got better and better, I understood it, understood how to make queries that yielded the results I was interested in, it was fast, and I was happy with it. Bing does not float my boat. It gives me far fewer choices, in some cases, none of which provided me with the info I'm looking for and, I'm simply not interested in it. End of story for me, it simply is NOT useful...for me!

Actually - wrong. On so many levels it would take an entire blog post to address.

First - - How in God's name do you hate the overreaching of a corporate giant like Verizon who has influence over such a tiny fraction of your life, and yet want to give more power to health insurer's who literally decide each day based on profitability who will live and who will die?

Next - Most people who know what's in the bill - now law want it. It's the moronic lies ("death panels" "government takeover") that people did not like. In my life I have found that the ignorant are perpetually 'pissed off' because they are routinely frightened by what they refuse to learn. The rest see problems and search diligently (and often quietly)for solutions. The so called "average American" none of which the thousands that I've met traveling through each of the continental 48 seem to be 'average' or 'typical' in any way; are routinely told that Washington is the problem, that Washington is broken. This too is wrong. Washington is a mirror that reflects the knowledge, skill, dedication and civility of the USA. If you don't like what you see in the mirror you can throw a bottle at it or you can work your **** off to change it. The solution to what ails democracy is MORE democracy. The first step is education. That involves more than listening.

Finally - From the Emancipation Proclamation to Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Insurce, Worker's Compensation, Social Security Disability were all un-popular social programs which caused great upheaval and for which the right wing in this country roundly hailed as a 'slippery slope ' to facism and the end of the American Way. Remember Licoln was assanated because Booth and many like him felt Lincoln was a facist, and traveling in the south you hear that view is still held by many. Reagan came to prominence in California by railing against Medicare as the godless plan of socialists that will destroy America. Talk about killing grandma! (PS the video is easily located on youtube). Not to mention the Voting Rights Act and Title IX (so maybe the WNBA isn't all its cracked up to be, but tens of millions of Americans are happy that their daughters now get to play sports).

24,000 people (Americans) died last year because they had no insurance or were underinsured. The fact that this bill took 100 years to pass, is a disgrace. In a country so proud of its deep religous roots we spend an awful lot of time ignoring our basic Judeao Christian tenents to love one another.

In the weeks and years to come, it will be clear that this law was not the Communist Awakening in America, that Death Panels did not rise up and put the lderly and infirm to death and all these opponents of reform will deny that they were ever so, or that they ever made up the ridiculous lies that with time will sound like 'reefer madness' and Americans will for the most part forget.

While I apologize for semi-hijacking a thread, I am quite frankly tired of listening to the sophmoric rants of other users on this site.

I couldn't agree with you more. The biggest issue here is "ignorance" by the very people who object. It has been my experience that they're ignorant about the facts and instead, rely on their favorite talking head who tells them what they should be thinking. I suspect most do not wish to invest the time/effort into actually learning something, they simply want the "Minute Rice" version so they can form an instant opinion and then move on to more important things like their bowling, NCAA brackets (ok, THAT IS important) and other stuff. A huge majority of this country have never even read the Constitution or, if they did, it was at least 20 years earlier in 4th grade or any other documents of importance.

I'm the only person in my circle of friends, who watches/reads/pays attention to, both Fox and MSNBC, plus all the various websites and blogs. I have an opinion, but I'm open to learning all sides so that I can make an informed decision. I trust no one to tell me "everything you need to know."

Ok, you're right...hijacking the thread, lol. Well said!
