Question US Cellular Overrides Default Ringtone?

I am a US Cellular customer. I set my ringtone for all phone calls for the Normal sound profile to Tune_BachFugueDMinor. I have not set any custom ringtones for individual contacts. When a non-US Cellular customer calls, it rings the Bach ringtone as expected. But when a US Cellular customer calls, it rings a barely audible "ding-dong" notification-type sound instead of the Bach ringtone. When I look at the ringtone settings for ANY individual contact, US Cellular customer or not, the ringtone appears to be set to "US Cellular" (the ding-dong sound), though that does NOT show up in my list of ringtones under Media. I manually changed a US Cellular contact's individual ringtone to the Bach one, asked him to call me, and confirmed that it rang as Bach, like non-US Cellular calls do.

Short of manually changing every single US Cellular customer's individual ringtone (as if I magically know which carrier each contact uses!), is there any way to override this? Why is US Cellular forcing their own custom ringtone to override the one I set up in the Normal sound profile?

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it,
Erica

According to tech support, there is a known software issue with Blackberry devices on US Cellular (don't know if it involves other carriers or not). Not all users are affected, my fiancee's works fine, but mine has the same issue you describe. The "US Cellular" ringtone is a preloaded tone that you can find a the top of the list (directly beneath "browse"). It is the default ringtone new out of the box, and simply defaults back to that even after a new ringtone is selected. Until a software update is released the only suggestion I was given is to do an OS wipe and reload on the phone.

Did you do that, and did it work? How do I perform an OS wipe and reload on the phone? (I've only had this thing for three days.)

Thanks again,
Erica

instead of the wipe/reload you can upgrade to the newest OS that was released today by US Cellular. Launch Blackberry Desktop Manager on your PC and plug in your phone. It will prompt you to update your phone's OS. Just follow the prompts that it displays on the screen. This release seems to have resolved my ringtone issue. It takes about 30-45 minutes to do the update.

I've been having that issue also. I'll have to upgrade sometime tomorrow.

I had a similar situation. When I was running OS 4.7 on my Tour, every so often some people would call and I would get the US Cellular default tone, even though my ringer wasn't set up for that. Then once I went to the sound profile icon, and scrolled to "Set Contact Alerts", and there were some contacts in there that had their default ringtone to the US Cellular tone. I don't know how this happened, and how they got there since I never set it up that way. I deleted all of the contact alerts in that list, and haven't had an issue since. Now I am running OS 5, and haven't had any contacts added to that list yet either.

This happens anytime you add or edit a contact on OS 4.7.

OK, I have to take back what I previously said.

Currently running OS 5. The other night I received three phone calls. The first two rang with the US Cellular tone. The third rang with the correct tone that I usually use (not sure of the name).

So, I don't know what to do. Any way to always have my default ringer used instead of the US Cellular chime?

I've had USCC BlackBerry's for the past few years. I've never had that issue with a call ringtone. I have had it when I received an email and text at the same time. One or the other will be an odd ringtone that I've never selected. Haven't noticed it as much since I'm on 5.0.0.662.

I upgraded to 5.0 because I am having the same issue. The US Cellular ringtone is annoying because I can not even hear it when there are other sounds around. Another problem that came up is I lost my lock keyboard icon when I upgraded. I still have that US Cellular Ring tone. I wanted to delete it, but I can not see the ring tone on the list. I went to the US Cellular store this morning and the person there also had the same phone as mine and he said he was having the same problem (USCellular Ringtone) and has no fix for it. My question is why would they force their ringtone on users?

Did you read the other posts? They're not forcing their ringtone on you. It's a bug in the software.

As far as I am concerned, if a bug exists and they know about it and they don't fix it, they are actually doing so. And I think that if you don't have anything constructive to say it is better that you not reply. It is just an additional useless information that others will have to read. I am quite sure others would not want to read plain rantings on this forum.

My comment was constructive. It's important to note that this was not a conscious choice by USCC but rather a software bug that, for many users, was solved by wiping the device and installing OS 5.0. Your point of view that USCC is forcing you to use their ringtone is nonsensical.
