I have a curve 8530 with the private data plan. Us cellular tells me that i can not tether with that plan and would have to upgrade to the $40 plan and that would have a 5 gb limit. Somehow, I have managed to get it to work on my current plan. Will they catch this and how much will it cost? My current plan has unlimited data on just the phone and supposedly unable to tether.

They don't block it. As long as you stay in a somewhat reasonable usage level they will never say anything. Your unlimited data plan is technically capped at 5gb. From what I have heard they don't say anything unless you consistently go over that cap month after month. But then again, it is surprisingly hard to go over. I am on my phone all the time and have rarely eclipsed 3gb in a month. Then again when I have tethered I will rack up around 10mb per 30min.
Just something to keep in mind.

My wife averages 2.5GB per month tethering and doesn't pay the extra $15. She's been doing it for several months and USCC hasn't batted an eyelash.
As kwineon said, keep it reasonable, don't use it as a replacement for your home Internet connection and you should be fine.

Thanks. I have broadband at work and home. Any hotel that I stay at has wi-fi. A lot of RV parks have wi-fi. It is just that occasional campground that does not have it when I would want to tether. Hard to justify the extra $15/month for a couple hours tethering 3-4 times a year.

i have a pearl 8130 and am interested in tethering, well, mostly, because i can...i heard about it here and have friends who have told me it's pretty fast. anyway, while fiddling with the BB desktop software i have found instructions to tether but don't know the setup info(username, password, access point, etc) and assume if i get that info from my friendly US cellular rep i'm fairly sure they will wanna charge me. does anyone know how to get this info, or does someone already have it? i am pretty sure i will never exceed 5 gigs a month and only want to have the option open to me.

IIRC your username is your phone number and the password is left blank.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I have a few lines with the "official" USCC tethering plan, and for all ours, the user name is the MSID/MIN followed by @uscc.net, and the password is just the MSID/MIN.
Alternatively, you could just spring for Tether. Pay $50 one time, and it's much easier to use.

Because I did not know until recently that you could get around using any solution, be it a service or software. Regardless, my users aren't exactly what you'd call tech savvy, and all I ever heard about was how hard the service was to use. Yeah, I know it's not hard, but that didn't stop the complaints. Once I tried Tether and discovered how easy it was to use, using it to stop the complaints was well worth the price of admission.
For other people, neither solution may be the better one, but I was merely throwing it out as an option.

It looks like if you have BlackBerry DM 6.0, it is automatically configured to work with USC's Tethering configs and connection is quick, easy and tells you your connection times and data usage. This will be perfect for the week after next when my wife and I are on vacation and staying at her father's boat in an area where "internet" means that two fishermen's nets have gotten tangled together!

I must be doing something wrong, no profiles at all in DM6 when I go to setup tethering.

Ok, so I have a blackberry bold and tour through sprint. So can I tether them because sprint said they don't tether any more? If so what program should I use?
Thanks.

Thanks. | You'd be best served by asking this in the Sprint forum, but there is an app called Tether that does it.

This is kind of off-topic, I apologize for that.
Can anyone explain the process for tethering a Razr V3m? I had done this in the past, 4 or 5 years ago, but cant for the life of me remember how to.
I think I create a dial-up connection, and use the ph# as the username and password?
Any help would be appreciated. Its for the mother-in-law who barely uses her phone, and is just starting to learn to use the web. I showed her how it works on my blackberry and she was floored!
