When in automatic is your phone roaming in your local area? Home only means it will not allow you to roam. Automatic will roam when your out of US Cellular's home area. Some people leave it on home only if they are on the edge of local coverage area and don't want to be charged any roaming. If you decide to travel outside local coverage you won't have service til you switch it to automatic

What about if you get a SIM card (which US Cellular won't supply, so you now have another phone number)....if the phone, the Tour, is lost, and US Cellular turns off your number, will the phone still work with the SimCard meaning you have to notify that carrier too?

I would think so, at the very least that would seem to be the prudent thing to do.

You should be fine. When I had USCC, I always kept it on home only or I would roam to the Canadian towers that are just across the river. I only changed it to automatic when I travelled.

That's a great point, if you're anywhere near the border you want to have it on "Home Only" or you'll risk getting dinged for international roaming if your phone locks onto a Canadian tower.
