Hi pvdiamon!
Well, first let me say that the Mesmerize is a great device and my wife does love hers and will keep it. I would add that if I had the choice of a Torch or something else I would have gone with that instead but that isn't a slam at the Bold as much as it is a personal desire to have a touch screen!
OK, I use my device extensively for work. E-mail is critical for me as is ease of phone use. Browsing is helpful and a definite need, but probably secondary. I like the "fun" stuff too but not as critical. The e-mail on the Mesmerize is not "push" like on the BB although you can have it checked frequently making it appear to be pretty close to "push." But it always seemed as though I was missing calls and the only thing I can attribute that to is that the device was "busy" checking e-mails while the call was coming in. It happened that way on my Windows mobile devices as well. If I'm mistaken about that I apologize and perhaps someone can correct me but that's just what I surmise. I guess I would have to say that I wasn't as confident about e-mail, particularly when there were messages that didn't seem to make it to certain e-mail accounts on the device. Could have been a comfort thing for me as well but I just didn't have that comfort in the Mesmerize e-mail system. In addition, when setting up a couple of accounts the native e-mail app on the Mesmerize would not work. I had to download a third party app to make it work for this particular account. Again the comfort thing. I also couldn't get comfortable with the keyboards regardless of the configuration and view. Perhaps I should have given that more time. Wasn't the worst though, seemed easy to use and nice touch, I just couldn't get used to it.
With regard to the phone, being able to flip the screen and tap a shortcut was great, but I didn't find voice dialing to be easy at all and that's something I use frequently. Also, to get to the screen with the shortcuts I always had to get the screen back on requiring an extra button hit. I understand why this is necessary because the screen drains the battery but it was just an annoyance. The screen lock was annoying as well so I would have to not only turn it back on but then unlock it. Having said that part I did find an app that prevented the lock but it did not work 100% of the time.
Oh yes, I almost forgot. I keep my calendar on my BB and use PocketInformant. I like it. They have it in beta for the Android and it worked well and looked really great, but I could not tell what would happen when my beta expired or if/when it would be released. I tried some others and they were OK but I definitely prefer PI. Syncing became a problem too, especially if I tried to use Google calendar. Events were duplicating, etc. I just couldn't figure out how to make it work well though I'm sure I could have given time and effort. I just wasn't willing to spend either. Preference again.
On the plus side, I did like the touch screen and the screen itself is very vibrant. Felt good in the hand, larger than my BB but felt OK. A lot of really neat features and, as you know, tons of apps. I would certainly recommend the device and, as I said my wife is keeping hers. Were my work life to change I would very likely go back. I just want to be sure that no one takes what I've said to be a negative review of the Mesmerize, not at all. It was just a personal preference/comfort thing for me based upon my use.
Hope this was helpful.
