Question Battery Life while "roaming"

I was recently on Martha's Vineyard, MA where USCC service is spotty ("roaming," probably on Verizon towers). I was often on 1x (no data) and often few bars, but rarely "searching for service." However my battery really went down fast. Even if I left it on a table where it had reception, it drained much faster than usual. Any thoughts on why, and if so, how you may deal with that issue?

Any time the phone is bouncing back and forth between EVDO, evdo, 1X, and 1x it's going to murder the battery, doing so while bouncing back and forth between native coverage and roaming is just adding insult to injury.

Even when the phone is sitting on the table with full signal, you don't know how tenuous that signal is or how hard the phone is working to maintain that signal.

Thanks...I guess that implies the answer is having an extra battery for those kinds of trips.

Or at least a charger close at hand...not the ideal situation obviously.
