Well I activated my new phone yesterday (Insurance replacement). I went to do this, but I can't, for the life of me, find these files to remove. C drive, common files, program files, RIM nothing.
My RIM file under common files only has 5 things: APPLoader, BBBI Drivers, Modem Drivers, RIMDeviceManager, USBDrivers.
I also have a RIM File under program files: Start > Computer > Cdrive > Program Files > RIM > Blackberry
This leads to a bunch of .dll files, and about 8 folders:

Umm, help? haha I know my explaination is probably horridly vague for you to help me, but any ideas? - 06-28-2008, 11:51 AM #202
If you haven't installed the device OS on your PC, you won't find the files. Look back at the first post in this thread and follow those steps.

I haven't had to replace a device, but based on your experience, I'd say you're correct. I hadn't thought about it.

I would think most carrier store fronts would have a preinstalled computer tucked away somewhere for just that purpose.

I downloaded the latest version of the desktop manager, however when I launch application loader nothing loads to either add or delete. I haven't added anything to my blackberry but am having severe memory leak since attempting to load the new Yahoo upgrade. I am to the point where I am ready to clean the whole thing and reload but wanted to check one last time for another option.

Welcome to CrackBerry.
There is no downside to recovering memory.
Applications Loader will work with the installed programs in device memory and programs you have downloaded to the computer.
After you have completed Step #2, you will have all the available choices. - 06-29-2008, 11:05 AM

I don't know for sure, but it is a pretty safe bet that the two programs are unrelated.
If I am wrong, removing VAD is reversable, just move the files back. - 06-29-2008, 06:35 PM #210
Ok, another problem. Well not problem but snag. I went into the loader files, deleted all the appropriate things. On my computer, those files are deleted. On my phone, under modules, they are still there. What gives? I rant the application loader, it shows a list of my 3rd party apps, I hit next. Then it says no action needed, and I can only click Finish. I'm confused.

C: / Program Files / Common Files / Research in Motion / AppLoader.
This is where the Vendor.xml file is located. It is created fresh each time you install a device OS.
This is a different sub-directory from the .../Shared / ... where the actual build files are located.
Vendor.xml controls whether or not Application Loader recognizes it as a valid OS. If it is still there, that would explain why AL is not updating your device.Last edited by Stoner; 06-29-2008 at 08:08 PM.

I know we talked yesterday about downloading and installing the OS on your PC. Can you check your windows control panel installed programs list and confirm that you have two blackberry entries? One for the OS and one for Desktop Manager.

I just double checked and it's there. I can always uninstall and reinstall the software and try again with it. Also, the phone communicates with the DM, the PIN shows up in the lower left hand corner and I can add/remove my current apps through it as necessary. I'll check it out tomorrow when I have more time.

Thank you all that contributed to this thread and to the original poster, Stoner. After completing the steps, I managed to go from 16mb to 28mb.

Im having an issue. I am trying to follow your steps to free up some memory and when I go into my computer and go to Start / Computer / C: Drive / Program Files / Common Files / Research in Motion / Shared / Loader Files, I dont actually have a shared folder and Im pretty much stuck. The only folders that are listed are >> App loader, BBBI Drivers, Modem Drivers, RIMDeviceManager, and USB Drivers. I dont understand why I wouldnt have the shared folder? I never deleted anything, and this is the first time I am really messing with it. The only thing I have ever done with the DM is backups and also played with Media Manager to get some songs on my SD Card. I am running the 4.3 OS that came on my CDMA 8330 from Verizon, and I also used the disc that came in the box to download DM. What should I do cause I am at a loss here? Should I try to download 4.5 and pray that those folders will show up? Please help Stoner!!!

Still got love for the Berry - 07-06-2008, 11:32 AM #220
It sounds like you don't have your OS installed on your PC. Look in control panel/add programs. You should see two entries, one for the OS and one for Desktop Manager. If you don't, go back to Step 2 and d/l and install the OS for your device. That'll fix it.

Step #2 is the most complex to install.
Once you have that done, you will find your files, including vendor. It is good feeling deleting that one, you know you did it right. - 07-06-2008, 12:34 PM #222
Aright, I def never installed my OS onto the comp. I just got a ridiculosly stable version of 4.5 for my CDMA verizon 8330 so once I load that up on the berry I will be good since its already gonna be on the comp right?

You are on the right track, but I would still advise that you install your original carriers OS first. Once you have that in place, installing beta software is far less risky.
It will take a little more time this way, but it could save you panic post if thing go wrong.

The actual software will come from BlackBerry, but I have seen links posted for the carrier connections.
