Question Need image editing software ASAP.. help!?

I started making my themes a couple of months ago and GIMP has been working really well for me, but there's a bug with GIMP that is causing a problem because of my USB hub (for three days now it pops up a "no disk" error every time I open, edit, save etc that takes about 20 clicks to close each time). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any work around aside from making sure all the ports in the hub are filled or unplugging it, neither of which is feasible in my case.

I checked out photoshop, which I've heard great things about, but even if I could afford it, I would never spend that much

So, does anyone know of software similar to GIMP that is preferably free or at least really cheap?

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

Did some googling for your issue and came across this:

Solved: "No Disk" error message in GIMP - Tech Support Guy Forums

Seems you can solve the issue by changing the drive letter of whatever device is currently using drive I: to another drive letter.

Thanks for the reply Russ!

Unfortunately that is the same thread I found earlier and after following the steps provided there was no drive "I" listed in the Disk Management on my laptop.

So to my knowledge, the only way I can fix the issue is to fill the USB ports entirely or unplug the hub. But as I said, neither of these is really an option for me

That's a shame, I love GIMP and would hate to need to move to something else, but then I do all my graphics and theming under Linux so have been used to GIMP for a while.

Perhaps installing an older version of GIMP might solve the issue until they get that GTK fix out?

You could also work through the list in this article and see if any of the other free ones suit your needs?

Yeah tell me about it. I like using it because I'm used to it and really don't want to have to learn a different program at this point, but I see no other alternative Plus I'm just now getting to the point where I know how to really use it.

I'll try to look around and see if I can find an older version, but again, it takes me right back to having to learn something all over again which is going to suck. Plus I have Windows 7, which a lot of older programs don't play well with

It crossed my mind yesterday after I replied that having a 7-port USB hub, I should by all means have a Drive (I). So this morning I gathered up everything I could find to fill up the empty ports and finally was able to get that particular drive to show up. Unfortunately changing the drive letter didn't resolve the issue

So I started racking my brain trying to figure out what, if anything, was different about my setup now versus last week when everything was working fine. Finally I was able to track down and resolve the issue, at least so it seems.

My home internet access is via a Verizon Wireless USB modem, which I typically keep plugged into a Cradlepoint router so we can connect our laptops via our own hotspot. Unfortunately, the last few days the signal has been really bad and I was constantly losing my connection (not good when trying to UL theme files), so I plugged the USB modem directly into the hub. My connection was great, but that's when the issue with GIMP started.

Basically I spent the morning plugging and unplugging everything, testing GIMP in between and it seems that having the USB modem plugged into the hub is what is causing the problems, which is why unplugging the hub yesterday (with the modem still plugged into it) was resolving the issue. It wasn't the hub, but rather the modem that was plugged into it

So for those who have the same issue where the drive (I) isn't the culprit, this is another avenue to look into. I've since removed the USB modem, tested GIMP several times and have been unable to get the "No Disk" error to show since. So as of right now, the problem has been solved

Thanks for the suggestions and I will keep them in mind. But since I now know what was causing the issue with GIMP, I'm going to stick with using it since I'm finally starting to get the hang of it after months of use lol

Thanks again!
