Default Icon Sets

Okay, I don't know if I'm just terrible at making icons or if my method of making them is just terrible. I've been attemping to create my very own icon set, now I do not know what programs would be best for this. I have windows xp, (ancient but reliable) and I've been using paint and gimp lol. Would anyone be willing to give me better ideas of what programs to use? Thanks for any replies, and just for reading

Photoshop and Fireworks will help you
Fireworks is easy for Newbies to learn so it is [RECOMMEND]
Photoshop is very complex, not good for Newbies [Not RECOMMEND]

On the contrary, I find Photoshop very easy to use (although i don't use it for making icons) and Fireworks looked like a lot of hard work when i first opened it. (I have to admit that i didn't really try to do anything in Fireworks, I just looked around a bit.)

EDIT: Going to give Fireworks a try

I find Photoshop crazy hard.. lol.. I use Corel Photopaint which is easier, but not as good.. and CRASHES ALL THE TIME NOW!!! driving me nuts.

Maybe I will give those a shot.

but to OP.. GIMP is quite good and should do what you need.

Gimp is pretty good, the UI is better than Photoshop's, but Photoshop has MANY more features... Never tried Corel so I don't know how that is , but Photoshop has always been good enough for me.

Okay 2 more things, 1 if either of those programs are free which one? Also I've noticed on some theme posts it looks like they've taken a screenshot straight from the computer, how is that? I've posted before but always used capture it from my own phone and the image always seemed somewhat sketchy. Thank you all for the ideas of what programs to use for my icons too :-).

You use simulator for taking screenshots, you'll find it on the web, google it.

Neither Photoshop nor Fireworks is free, Gimp is the best free alternative
