help with icons and their focus counterparts

So I've made about five themes which I'm waiting to get perfect before I post them up here to give out. What I have been doing is putting an icon in composer and then putting the focus icon behind it. My issue with this is everytime you restart the phone all the focus icons will be turned on until you scroll over it and then works properly. I have the icons set to application order. When I merge the application icon and the focus icon together using gimp and use that bitmap for the focus icon it won't use the focus, so I figure that's not how you do it. Can someone tell me how to merge the icon and the focus icon so that it shows up when using application order so the icon the user has on the BB will have my focus behind it?
Edit: I just re read this and it might be confusing so I hope someone understands what I was trying to say.

Yeah your right that's really confusing to follow... When I make icons I make the normal and focus icons separately then manually add them. I also make mine through photoshop and haven't started using composer yet so someone maybe able to offer a bit more help on that front

Yeah, I do it more like henry2264 does it. I create separate icons in PSE-7 with different transparencies, etc. Then, in Composer, I just show him both for each button. If you want more feedback, tell us what you mean by "...then putting the focus icon behind it." Doctor Neutron
