Extra SVG in Application-Menu.svg- Is it possible?

I have added some svg code to the application-menu.svg file but the code is not being used. Has anyone had success adding svg to the application-menu.svg file?

I have tried numerous times to no avail... Im not sure why it doesnt work, but it doesnt seem to do anything.
