I've never tried, but you could try making an animated gif picture file

Use caution when animating backgrounds. If an animation loops forever, you'll drain your battery fast.

Instead... consider playing an animation when you focus-in on an icon.

I was playing around with this one day and it turned out pretty cool, so I posted it a PimpMyBerry:

The first 4 applications show on the home screen (based on application order). When you focus in on an icon, an animation plays. The screen shots below loop forever, but I don't do this in the theme.

Thanks, guys.

Nooberry - Yes, you can set it to animate only once. The street grid sounds interesting. I'd assign an animation (set loop=1) when you focus-in on an icon.

My understanding is that animated themes take quite a bit more file space just to store, plus excess battery life to run... not worth it to me, but there is some definite potential out there.. maybe if the right one comes along for me, I will reconsider.

Its not that hard just load your animated gif in composer and tell it to convert to animation...

Then make a button and tell it to play that animation on whatever action you want, focus or click...
