How long do you plan on being in the US?
The reason I asked is when I started my current job, I was traveling back and forth between Canada and the US a lot, so I used to travel state-side, pick up a local SIM, pop it in and go from there. One day, I forgot to pick up a SIM and basically roamed my way through the US for 2 days with my TELUS phone, roaming. (Mind the pun!)
When I got home, the bill was about $15 more than usual, but it was less than how much I had usually spent on local SIM cards. Granted, I wasn't abusing the phone, sent about 50 texts, made about 2, 5 minute phone calls, and sent somewhere in the ball park of 10 emails.
So it might be worth looking at your data usage needs, vs. how much it costs to roam. I know I might get some flack about saying this, but depending on your usage/needs it might work just as well. You also wouldn't have issues with having to release your PIN, attach it to another carrier in the US, create a BIS account with them, then reverse it all when you come home.
Might also be worth calling Loyalty and seeing if they can offer you some sort of roaming package.
Today, none of this matters for me anymore as I have a Telus North American Business package and an AT&T iPhone.
PIN me if you have any questions!
