Default Telus Torch??

So, has anybody taken the plunge yet and gotten they're Torch yet? I'm curious to hear the initial impressions of how the device is on the Telus Network.

I had to switch out my Storm 2 for an Android Milestone due to reception issues...so I'm curious how the BB performs on the HSPA network.

Hi there,

I am originally a storm 1 owner from Telus and although I loved it, I have to admit I sometimes envied the snappiness of other phones. I skipped the Storm 2 altogether because my budget didn't like buying two phones within the same year almost. With the coming of the Torch, it was the perfect opportunity for me to upgrade even though I was temped by the iphone 4, and even was willing to wait for the storm 4 next year. However, I do not regret my decision:

This phone is amazing. The OS6 really is refreshing and provides a more seamless experience. App integration into the core OS is very useful. If you need more details, check out the comprehensive review from crackberry.

Now for my impressions: Responsiveness is very good. Coming from a Storm myself, let me tell you that you'll love it. You feel like you're using something that just works. No lags, no freezes, it works. Accelerometer is snappy, you won't have any troubles switching from landscape to portrait mode. Opening applications is instant.

Also , you'll feel like you can finally use the blackberry to it's full potential, opening multiple applications, multiple tabs in the browser and still be able to make a phone call or listing to music, all this without lag. Of course you'll have the occasional slowdown if you push it, but generally you won't feel like the device is slowing you down. It follows you.

In terms of reception, it's also better. There was an area in my house where I would get only one bar on the old CDMA network. I now get 3 bars there. not the best but good improvement. Other than that I get full bars basically everywhere in the Montreal area.

My recommendation? GET IT!

I'm so torn. Deciding between staying with BB and going Torch or moving on to something different like a HTC Desire. Torch is a step up for BB but still not on par with other handsets out there IMO.

How much will I miss BBM?!?

Well, I missed it a lot. But I had a lot of friends and family on bbm.

As an update, I found a Telus store that had a working demo...here's my own partial review of my 5 minute hands on.

O/S - Snappy. Works well and as was stated, never really feels like it hangs. The pinch zoom is cool. I wasn't able to use any network features as it wasn't a live phone - so I have nothing to say about the webkit.

Hardware - The screen is amazing...its at least AS sensitive as my Droid (milestone). The slide out keyboard felt awkward and the keys felt a little too flat (which I realize was nessassary to accomodate the slide over screen) so that would take time to get used to if I switched. The on screen keyboard was as good as the Droid's on screen although, I kind missed the sure press from my Storm 2.

The biggest gripe I had with the device was actually build quality and perhaps I can get some more feedback on this...but for a brand new phone...the slider has quite the wiggle in it...I'm surprised that wasn't addressed before the build/release phase. My Droid has a horizontal slide out and while I realize you will ALWAYS have a certaing amount of play, regardless of how new/old it is...this, to me, felt excessive. It made me wonder how it would feel after a few months or a year.

My storm2 just crapped out and I need a new BB. I bought the desire, and although android is awesome I couldn't handle no BBM and no blackberry email. So i'm considering a torch as well.

I currently have a Tour with a wonky screen. I was thinking of getting the Desire, but I just found out that Telus will be getting the Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate soon, so unless I can find a Desire or similar handset for a great price I'm waiting.

I'm waiting for my third Torch due to the wiggle, hopefully this one will be more solid. I'm prepared for some movement in the slider mechanism, but I can't handle the rattle when I use the touchscreen with the phone closed.

I'm stuck with the dull black berry curve on the cdma band. Is the tourch slide out key pad the same size as a cruve?

Thiers a lot I like with black berry, but the key pad is to small, as for the touch screen, is it a bigger key pad surface?

Most likely I buy out may contract and move away from Telus if I go for a new Tourch.

What about breadth of coverage? I travel outside the metropolitan centers, and the whole "GSM hybrid" network is new to Telus so I'm not sure how well that would work.

I believe that the HSPA network is overlayed on the entire existing CDMA network, so wherever you have CDMA coverage, you should have the same corresponding HSPA coverage. You should actually have better reception, due to HSPA's better building penetration.
