HSPA Monthly Plan Questions
Hello
Is anyone on a new Telus HSPA plan? Can you please share the details of your HSPA plan.
I have been with Telus since 2004. I am trying to negotiate with the Telus Loyalty in preparation for my Blackberry Torch purchase. From initial discussion the plans offered seem to be costing me more.
Is this a good offer? For 70$ (before taxes) I get the following
1 - 6 Gig of data
2- Unlimited nights starting at 6pm till 7am + free weekends
3 - Call display and voicemail
4 - Unlimited text
5 - 400 day time minutes
Currently I am paying 52$ (before taxes) and I basically have the same plan above (unlimited web,500 daytime min) and more
Also If I want to buy the BB Torch, do I have to switch to a HSPA plan?
Thanks - 08-26-2010, 10:54 PM #2
You have to leave the CDMA network if you buy the 9800 Torch, it's not a CDMA device.
I have the $50 Clear Choice plan now. On CDMA I was paying $45/mo. plus SAF and tax for the same plan, now I pay $50 but no SAF.
So for me it was roughly the same price on both networks, but when I switched to HSPA my unlimited data went to 500MB. My BBM, e-mail, and web browsing only amount to about 100MB a month, so it's not an issue for me. But if you use a lot of data or want to tether, 500MB probably won't cut it.Last edited by DaveInVan; 08-26-2010 at 11:08 PM.

It sounds like your looking at the Clear Choice $65 ?
If you have access to wifi at home, at work or wherever, you will not need
6GB of data. Unless you plan on downloading everything in sight, streaming music 24/7 and tethering, you probably won't ever hit 6GB.
I'm careful with my usage and keep it under 500MB. (Clear Choice $50.00)
Normally the $65 plan includes 1GB of data, but they have a promo on until Oct. that adds an extra 5 GB, for plans of $60 or more.
I think it depends on what you'll be doing with your device.
Do you want to be careful, or be a data pig?
I've been considering calling up Telus and paying the extra $15 a month so I can have 6 GB, and never worry about going over again.
I also have the 6PM early nights and weekends. There was a promo for that when I re-signed.
The unlimited National talk and text to my five favorite numbers works for me, as most of my calls are to the same people.
Another thought about data.
Right now 6GB is a HUGE amount per month.
In a couple of years, with new features and technology, it may not seem like that much.
Do you think data costs for consumers will increase or decrease in the future?
It all depends what your usage will be.My ignore list:

Wait, do you have to change your plan when you switch to the HSPA network? I just bought a new HSPA device and did the device switch from my old CDMA device but they never mentioned anything about having to change my plan.. did I miss something?

That's correct, Telus had no problem with me changing my voice plan and L&R free features from CDMA to HSPA, but they wouldn't let me transfer the unlimited data. After about a month, I switched to the clear choice 50 because it was essentially the same price for me but I had free MY5 in addition.

Thanks for all your input!
In the end I negociated the following deal:
I stuck with the 17.50 (Sweet deal 25$) + 7.95 (access fees)
1) total daytime minutes 450 (200 base + 250 bonus)
2) unlimited SMS (in and out)
3) free caller id
4) free evening (6pm-7am) and weekends
5) Voice mail 10 (2$ instead of 7$)
Data
1) 1 gb for 30$
Total 57$ before taxes.
Does anyone have a better plan on the new HSPA network?

Unfortunately you might have to.
I have kinda the same plan except Unlimited Data and free evening and weekends @ 5pm. and My fave 10. (this plan is really really really old)
But and it's a huge BUT !
I was speaking to a Teck rep in Vancouver and he was an unlock Torch (working fine btw) He said to me that if your buying out the phone with out touching the upgrade of your Contract, your plan should work as soon as you put the sim card in.
(now heres' the BUT) As soon as its up and running and your existing plan dont work, then you can try to get the 6GB Plan that's offered on the Site.
(Doesn't say offered only to new clients)
Limited time offer on 3 year activations:

Hope that helps - 09-10-2010, 02:34 PM #10
yup, but keep in mind people most features (especially the freebies) have expiry dates. Be sure you're wary of them and be sure you negotiate that those get extended for your term.

BTW @ AsianStorm
Make sure that your Unlimited Txt is Unlimited when you hit up the U.S.
From what i've been told recently is that on the HSPA network evernthough you have unlimited you'll get a new charge for txting in the U.S.
ask about that. Because I'll be haveing the same problem in a couple of weeks - 09-13-2010, 09:53 AM #13
Man i do not know what happened to telus but i tried doing the same thing switching to the HSPA.
Telus cannot match my plan at all. The best they can do is cost me $10-15 more a month for less service.
Im getting
350 min
250 north amarican LD min
nights and weekends at 7
per second billing
250 text
unlimited incoming
my 5
voice mail 25
call forwarding
unlimited data
caller id
im paying $93 taxes in
the best they can give me is
300 min
200 long distance
my 5
unlimited incoming
unlimited text
caller id
voice mail 3
6pm
1gb
for over $100
such bull**** i still have 15 months left on my contract so i think im going to stay and wait until its done i guess.
no way im going to spend like $106 a month for less and sign a 3 year contract - 09-21-2010, 04:44 PM #14
YUp just had the same problem. Firstly my gf is using my phone while im in France for a yr wanted a new phone. Then she phoned them they changed my contract. Firstly she doesn't have the right to give permission to change anything. Secondly they changed it WITHOUGH her wanted to change anything then when she said wait hold on change that back they hung up on her!!!
now my plan has NO data what so ever but has free international roaming and free international calling on FIM. They say that what I had doesnt exist. Well if it does not exist then how do i have it. It isn't my problem that they don't offer those deals anymore but they must honor their contracts. I wrote them a nasty email about the crazy **** they are trying to pull. Their advertisement of the fastest network in canada is fraud if i can't even BE on that network. I guess i'll try to get 6 gig? is that the most they offer on the new network?
any advice people?
oh and i lost free incoming calls which is really what makes my contract.Last edited by Defero; 09-22-2010 at 01:38 PM.

The offer ends tomorrow I think but I got the student 55
200 daytime minutes
10 nationwide faves
Unlimited incoming and outgoing txt, picture and video messages
Nights and weekends @ 5
I added caller I'd for 7 and got the device protection for 7 (which I'm now debating, aparently in NL if it is lost or stolen its not covered !) So 55 plus 7 plus 7 so 69 before taxes is not bad imo.

Hey guys I used to have storm2 with student 50 old plan which also includes unlimited data. Last week my storm 2 broke and I got a free torch from best buy since I have the extended warranty. When I called telus to do a hardware switch the tech guy didn't mention anything about changing the plans from cdma to hspa plan. My data is working fine so I am assuming I still have unlimited data since the tech guy didn't say a word about how I have to go on new hspa plan.
