The SOS mode signifies the wireless carrier network is not available and the telephone has automatically switched into its 9-1-1-enabled dial-out mode. If your BlackBerry is UMA-capable and you have a wireless network (WiFi) available, enable WiFi to determine whether UMA mode starts up. I had SOS show up on my BB9700 this week for a brief period of time while walking at the park shortly after a hurricane blew through the area.
