Default Getting a new phone, confused by these new plans.

Hi guys,

Last night my Pearl 8130 got eaten by my puppy; luckily (or unluckily) it was already not working so it was time to get a new one anyway.

I decided on the new Pearl 9100, but when I called Telus I was told I was not allowed to keep my unlimited plan any longer.

I've been looking over the plans and I like the Blackberry Social plan for 40 dollars with unlimited nationwide talk & text. I noticed this doesn't include web access. Does that mean I can't receive emails either?

If I add a data add on for $15 (the 50mb one) that includes web browsing, email and any apps I download from the web correct?

I was told my old plan is "not compatible" with the new phones. LOL I almost laughed at him.

If anyone knows any combos that are better than the one I'm thinking please let me know.

The other I was looking at is the Voice & Data 50 with 500mb data (which means Facebook + Twitter + Email is used there...?), but I don't talk on the phone as much as I text, and when I do call someone it's long distance.

So confused. I wish I could keep my unlimited plan.

Keep your old plan by buying a phone from craigslist. New metwork doesn't have unlimited data plans.

You can also get a Storm 9550 or a Tour 9630 and keep your current plan. They're on the CDMA network, meaning you can keep your plan. Any new phone that's on the new HSPA network will require that you switch your plan.

My Pearl 3G is on the truck to be delivered today, so I have to choose.

Decided to go with the Blackberry social plan ($40) + Data add on which will give me 500mb of data.

That will allow me to check my emails correct?

Yes...Kind of a waste though. The data add on is $30, is it not? Why not just get Voice 30 + Unlimited messaging (100 minutes, you could talk them into 50 bonus) + Your data? If you have a data plan, you don't need the social plan, since all those things use data. The Social Plan is everything except internet and GPS. Data is all the social + internet and GPS, so...

EDIT: I noticed your long distance calling / texting thing. The Voice 30 + messaging works for the text messages, but not the long distance calling. I can't honestly think of a cheaper option than what you have set up, it's just too bad they didn't have a voice plan like that that you could add data to, instead of the whole Social Plan.

Also, the reason you can't keep your plan because the 9100 (Pearl 3G) runs on Telus new 3G+ (HSPA+) Network, which doesn't have the old plans on it. (such as the BlackBerry 45 Plan, Unlimited Data, Combo 60) and which is why they introduced their 'Clear Choice' plans to BOTH networks, so any transfers would be painless as those plans are priced the same on both networks. Your old 8130 ran on Telus' CDMA network, which is not the same. (no SIM card, 9100 has a SIM card, basically)

I can get the 50mb data add on for $15 or the 500mb add on for $25, Looking at my usage I average around 40 mb a month but there are times I go way over and don't want to risk it.

I've been looking at all of them trying to find the cheapest and it looks like it'll be around $55-70 depending on what I choose.

Oh and it says I have to go into a Telus store to get the data add on.

Does anyone know if they'll add it if I set up my new phone over the phone with them?

Yeah they can, I have no idea why it says that unless it's a promotional offer from a particular store close to you. And yeah, that's about average. I pay around 70 with tax on the Voice 30 + Messaging / Data 30 + Call Display.

Cool thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

If I find another combo that's cheaper I'll post it. Purolator has it on the truck right now so I figure I have half the day or so to find a plan I like.

Best of luck, and glad I could help.

Definitely let us know about the plan thing! I might look at some different options if you can find one cheaper. :P

The Blackberry social plan can't be combined with a data plan :\

Also for others, the 50 MB does not apply to BlackBerry devices. Only for other smartphones and mobile phones.
