Default Does the Telus 9700 have any advantage over Rogers 9700?

Presently using Rogers 9000, not happy with the voice quality and wonder if the Telus 9700 will be an upgrade as far as audio quality is concerned.

Debating if should I simply upgrade to Rogers 9700 and stay on the same network?

I keep hearing about the SMS date stamp error (for HSPA Telus/Bell users on the west coast), as well as problematic voice mail notification. As well, there is the broken long SMS text messages with Telus/Bell.

The good old CDMA had superior voice quality, but not sure if the new HSPA can compare and the switch will be a waste of time.

Much appreciate any feedback in advance.

It will make essentially no difference whether you get a Rogers 9700 or a Telus 9700. Where it will make a difference though is reception. Rogers and Telus/Bell use different cell towers and have covered different areas of the country to different extents. So the difference may be that you get better reception in some areas on Telus than you will on Rogers. Beyond that, there should be essentially no difference. In addition, the minor glitches are getting worked out of the system, so if you're going to be in it for the long haul, it won't matter if you're with Telus or Rogers.

Thanks very much guys, will look into the costs as well as the UMA availability. I see that they also handle SMS text messages differently,

With Telus, long messages are broken up into 6 separate messages while with Rogers, they are joined back automatically..

Telus and Rogers are using the same hardware on the 9700 so UMA availability is a moot point.

I suppose the biggest difference is that Roger's 9700 will fall back on their 2G while Telus's 9700 will only work on 3G?

But then, I thought I read somewhere Telus is largely HSPA+ while Rogers isn't?

All a little confusing.

It's true that a Rogers 9700 will fall back to 2G when it doesn't have 3G coverage when the Telus/Bell will not.
But... the Telus/Bell HSPA network is much larger than the Rogers one. Where you have CDMA coverage you will have HSPA.... making the 2G backup un-necessary.

I have been with the HSPA network on Telus since the launch of the 9700. Had some minor issues but have noticed MASSIVE improvements.
I have 1 or 2 places near my house that my phone loses network and will try and connect to AT&T but I am right on the St. Lawrence and could literally swim to the States if I wanted. Since I have set my network to manual I no longer lose my signal.

I am now VERY happy with the new network!

Thanks Megcashman, this is exactly what I wanted to hear.

I always feared the HSPA is inferior to their old trusted CDMA, glad to hear it's not.

By the way, do you have any problems with longer text messages?

Texts get broken up into multiple messages of 160 characters each, regardless of carrier. Rogers does it too. Same phone, experience will only differ based on coverage. Rogers' network was better than Bell's and Telus's CDMA, but the new HSPA network is better pretty much everywhere I've been. Good luck

Regarding the text messages, it's interesting as on my 9000 Bold, the messages are automatically joined together creating a long single readable page.

I wonder if it is the same with the 9700 on Rogers and Telus.

Rogers are known to cripple some features of the phones.
E.G. Blackberry maps
I am happy with telus HSPA except that I have less coverage than in old CDMA in some locations:
Metro PEEL or MCGILL I no longer have connection while waiting for the wagon to come....
On the other hand I have simultaneous voice and data with hspa it is really
awesome

I think I have confirmed my main problem with Telus/Bell. Their interior SMS system not allowing a BlackBerry to patch multiple long SMS messages into one.

All this talk about how telus' HSPA coverage being larger than Rogers' is cute!

It doesn't mean you'll have a signal in your house, in a basement or in a building.

Rogers manages to get their signal through pretty much anything while the same can't be said about Telus. I've seen it first hand many times.

I can only hand it to telus where they may have coverage in a more remote area. Otherwise Rogers will always be the better bet no matter where you are in their coverage zone.

If Telus and Bell didn't depend on each other so much, it would be an even cuter story!

That has to do with Tower positioning in relation to you or the building in question....

Now i've noticed a huge improvement on my HSPA phone over the cdma network as far as penetration into buildings and areas that all 3 carriers have had troubles with before.
