Question 9650 Unlocked To Telus??

Hi, I really want to purchase the new Bold 9650, but of course, I live in Canada, and we don't have it.

I'm hearing like 20 different stories about whether it would work unlocked or not. I'm hoping to go for Telus, but Bell could work too. I don't want Rogers, I'm with them right now.

Finding the phone is a piece of cake, but I don't know if it's going to work on the networks I want.

To be honest, I don't care if I only have EDGE and not 3G (Would be nice though), but as long as I can phone, text, email, and browse the internet it will be fine. I'm praying that it works on Telus, though.

Thanks.

Thank you for the quick reply, and the helpful info.

That kind of sucks, but I'll consider Fido, can't knock it until I try it.

Thanks. :)

Oh wow, didn't know anything about it until now.

Oh gosh, now I have so much more to think about. Lol.
Well, I'm going to look into it more. That could also save ME money because my parents told me to wait too, and that they'd get it.

Thanks, again!

Didn't Telus install GSM networks not long ago? Should work if you unlock and get a Telus SIM card.

But yeah it's safe to save your money for a newer model.

It would only work in north America on 2g and Telus and bell don't have 2g sooki. Therefore it will not work. The 9780 would work on 3g if you got it from the right carrier.

Telus didn't install a GSM network. They installed an HSPA network. I don't know about the phone you're looking for, but if it's not an HSPA or GSM/HSPA phone it won't work with a Telus sim card. GSM and HSPA aren't the same apparently. I asked this question on this forum a week or so ago and that's what I've gathered.

it is the upgraded tour 2 renamed bold2 runs on cdma network on verizon in usa. the sim card on the 9650 only can do edge/2g in north america and needs to be unlocked to use edge/2g. bell and telus do not have a edge/2g network so it will not work. Rogers and Fido do so it would work on their networks.

In terms of network tech, the 9650 should work fine on Telus or Bell (it is essentially an upgraded 9630), however I think the problem has something to do with CDMA phones being difficult to transfer from one network to another. Or, company policy that they just won't do it.

If anyone can confirm that it can be done, I'd like to do the same...

The only way it would be possible is if you knew someone at Telus who is willing to do it for u I think. And I'm not sure if Verizon also has to release the phone so 99.9% of people will not be able to get the 9650 working on another network.

blackmarket is correct. A Verizon or Sprint 9650 will not work on Telus, period. Telus and Bell will not activate CDMA devices from other carriers on their networks, and as was stated before, the GSM bands on the 9650 are not compatible with the North American 3G networks and since the new HSPA network is only backwards compatible with 3G and not 2G, the 9650 won't work. It will work on Rogers/Fido because Rogers and Fido offer an EDGE connection.

Anyone who says it will work simply doesn't understand the carriers and network compatibilities.

As was stated, I'd also suggest waiting for the 9780, or even the 9800 Torch slider which will be coming soon.
