| | WiFi Hotspot on Nexus One
Now that tethering is not free with T-Mobile, does anyone know if the wi-fi hotspot option on Nexus One is free? I have a Nexus One and I can use it as a wi-fi hotspot. Granted I only use it once or twice a month and it is a good feature, but does anyone know if this will be free once T-Mobile starts charging for tethering?

Tethering is not free. Wifi hotspot is tethering.

If you root your phone and install a 3rd party app, you'll get around it. I'm doubtful if you'll be able to continue using the native hotspot client once these plans roll Out.

Darn it, that sucks.
Well, thanks, to both of you, for responding.

The android wifi tether app (google it) is really good for hotspot though. Just requires root (do a one-click root program to make it easier) and then you can run the app. It broadcasts the signal well, is really fast, and you can even encrypt it in WEP/WPA. Mine is set to WPA, I believe.

m | It has nothing to do with which app you use, especially on the Nexus, which TMO has no influence on. Tethering generates very different network traffic from the on-board web browser on the phone. If you tether without the tethering add on, don't be surprised if you get charged for the feature if they find out

Really? I thought they couldn't tell if you tether if you used a 3rd party app and kept the usage under 5GB.
I'm not using it as my home internet but sometimes I get stuck in places and really need to use it. Not much but I do use it occasionally.
This is just a real bummer, I'm sorry. I wish tmobile would allow tethering on smartphone plans as long as people stay below a 5GB limit.

Last time there was a policy revision, tethering was allowed on smartphone data packages. I think it's crap that they're changing it, but then again, I know the reason why. Because other carriers do it. Same reason they charge an upgrade fee.
Without going on too much of a tangent, I think people should focus more on how they're treated and the quality of service rather than price. Good luck getting that to happen though.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I agree with you. I only use it maybe three times a month, and when I do it is for less than 10 minutes each time. It used to be convenient, but I guess everything comes to an end.

I bet if I continued with my occassional use id be ok. I'm not streaming videos or d/l stuff, just surfing the web, checking email, and IMing. I think I've sent a few documents but that's it.

I'm thinking the same thing. Tmo probably wouldn't care if we used it occasionally, especially if we don't even go anywhere close to 5 gig anyway.

Yeah my data usage is the same when I tether on some months compared to other months when I may not need to.
Ppl on vzw and att tether too. 3rd party programs and not a lot of usage, so I don't see why the same wouldn't apply here.
