Default WiFi Calling

Forgive my ignorance...I bought the new 8900 from T-mobile about 2 weeks ago and bought a wireless router for my house. I have a pretty basic phone plan --> 1,000 minutes + Data plan. I bought the wireless router because I thought that calls made on WiFi were free. Therefore, any calls I make while I am at home would be FREE, without taking minutes out of my plan. Am I mistaken? Am I supposed to add something to my plan? I can make calls while connected to my WiFi, but I dont want to do it if they are going to charge me more money to make WiFi calls. Please help!!!!

You need to have T-Mobile @Home service... It's 10 bucks a month to have unlimited UMA calling on your phone.

So does that mean I'm getting charged extra to use UMA calling or it still takes them out of my bucket of minutes?

Yes, unless you are paying $10 a month for the Unlimited Hot Spot Calling addon, the Wifi calls you are making, come out of your plan mins.

The only advantage to UMA calls, if you are NOT paying for the Unlimited Hot Spot Calling, is that if you have poor cell tower signal at home, you can still make calls over Wifi.

So it's up to you. Do you want to make FREE calls over Wifi or do you want to make calls over Wifi (out of your bucket of mins), because the signal is better than the local cell towers near your home?

^^ I just wanted to say thanks for that info. I also just got a bb with wifi and was wondering how UMA works. Luckily, I have unlimited minutes.

Which is good, (having unlimited minutes), for you the only advantage in using wifi is poor signal areas, or inside buildings that do not have much if any cell signal, unless you are near a window.

Are you thinking about a WiFi VOIP service like Skype?
This is not available and the new Skype client (soon) will use WiFi (or your internet minutes) only to login but use your phone minutes for the voice connection.

this is why for $10 I change to unlimited minutes(loyalty plans). UMA rulez, I mean I don't have good coverage in my area, but with UMA, the berry works perfect!
