| | Why is TMO so greedy?
My current contract with TMO expired a couple of weeks ago. My 9700 is in very good condition and I wasn't planing on getting a new phone hoping the QNX devices would be out early next year. However when RIM pushed back the release of OS2 for the playbook until February I'm guessing we won't a QNX device for at least a year.
So I looked to see what TMO has available and here's what I found.
T-Mobile: BB 9810 $249.99 - BB 9900 $299.99 after discounts and rebates.
AT&T: BB 9810 $49.99 - BB 9900 $199.99 after discounts and rebates.
Why such a big difference?

The phone prices are half the picture. You need to consider the cost of the plan as well.

Because T-Mo's service prices are so much cheaper, they wouldn't make back the same sized phone subsidy as quickly as ATT does, if at all.
Also, because ATT is larger, they can absorb more of the initial costs because they know they'll get it back from you and then some...
Compare your T-Mo service to the equivalent ATT service. How many months will it take before the $200 difference gets eaten up in monthly charges?

Cost of phone+200MB of data on TMO: 300+(24x5)=420
Cost of phone +200MB of data on AT&T: 200+(24x15)=560
I did not look at base rate plans, etc, but having switched from AT&T to TMO, I know the latter charges less per month.

It's all about researching the price on other carries and using that to your advantage. If you call and inquire on the proce and then tell them that another carrier has the same phone for less, they will come off the price of the price of you have been with them for a while. My 9900 cost me $69.99, originally $300. My 9780 cost me $29.99, originally $159.99. My 9700 cost me $99.99, originally $229.99. My 8900 was $99.99, originally $250.
I normally express a lower price through another carrier to seee if that gets me what I want. If not, I advise them of my choice to cancel and move my 2 lines. They always get me to the customer retention dept who will definitely give me what I want. It may take you a couple of tries but you can get your phone for less than the sticker price.
As far as rate plan, I have the loyalty plan(no longer offered) for $79.99 for both lines of unlimited talk. $9.99 for unlimited messaging, and $19.99 unlimited web.

Why such a big difference? | If you have a Costco membership, they are cheaper there. I got the 9900 for $229, and I just checked and they are now $149. I may actually go over and see if they will give me some coin back.

If you're off contract with TMO, and want to stick with them, go with Value plan; it's cheaper in the long run, even though you have to purchase phone at full retail. Even paying $600 for TMO 9900 and going with Value plan is cheaper than "discounted price" and Classic plan. Do the math, any way you add it up, the Value Plan and buying phone at full price (or off ebay) is the cheapest way to go.

tmobile seem to have new plans so often, and each change in the plan comes with higher in cost
dont think ATT do that so often
not to mention each time a new plan that tmobile comes out with becomes more and more confusing

I agree. I switched off of loyalty and added a line for a total of 4 lines for under $150 a month. I'm saving $55 a month..over $1300 over 2 years and I will shop around and buy a phone off of ebay.

not to mention each time a new plan that tmobile comes out with becomes more and more confusing | I think you mean every time they come out with a new plan they're LOWER in cost. I just jumped on their new 100 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited data plan for $30. I don't think you can beat that anywhere.
