Arrow What unlocked BlackBerries work with T-Mobile and are upgrades over the 8900?

Please forgive me if this may seem like a stupid question to some, but I am a Verizon user myself, and all phones I get are locked Verizon phones, so this is foreign territory for me.

That said, my brother is with T-Mobile and is looking to change to a different BlackBerry. He is on a 8900 Curve from T-Mobile. I am familiar with the general cell phone idea that you can get an unlocked phone and pop in the T-Mobile SIM card and in most cases, it will work as if it were a native T-Mobile phone.

My question is, what BlackBerries would be considered an upgrade over the 8900 that would work perfectly with T-Mobile, even if they have to be unlocked? I would prefer to know the model number AND what company the phone is native to (ex: My personal BB is a Verizon 9650 Bold) so that it can help me when I scour my sources to get deals.

It's not a matter of finding a deal on a phone, it's just a matter of finding out which phones would work for sure so I'm properly focusing my search.

Also, if the phone would work for T-Mobile, but is locked, how do I go about unlocking it?

All of this information would be of help to me immensely.

Thank you.

Any GSM/HSPA device will work on Tmobile but only on 2G unless they have the compatible frequency as Tmobile.

As far as I know...there are only 2 Blackberries from Verizon that use SIM cards and can be unlocked to run on T-Mobile's nertwork. They are the Blackberry Tour and the Blackberry Storm 2. Neither of them will run 3G because the radios in them are banded for Verizon's network and there is no way to change this. However they will run 2G or EDGE. Unlocking is as easy as calling Verizon's Technical Support and requesting the unlock code, they should be able to walk you through it or send you an email with detailed instructions. Keep in mind....only phones that are specifically built (branded) for T-Mobile will be able to take full advantage of the network (3G, 4G).

Pretty much any ATT Blackberry can be unlocked for use on T-Mo. I use a Bold 9000.

Any of Verizon's Global BB's should also work.

Cincinnati Bell devices also use the same 3G frequency bands as T-Mobile.

The easy method is to just buy a tmobile branded phone so your brother can run 3G speed and wouldn't even have to bother unlocking the device. I guess a bold 9700 or bold 9780 would be the best of what tmobile offers.

All 9xxx VZW Blackberry devices with a SIM card are capable of working on T-Mobile. This includes, 9530, 9550, 9630, and 9650. I've used all four on TMO, but as mentioned above, no 3G. You must have a TMO or Wind branded device to get 3G

Thank you.
There are several forum members who offer unlocking services, myself included. It's an easy process that usually costs $5. I've run a 9650 on TMO and liked it a lot. Plus you already have the phone, which reduces costs
