While the end of free tethering is nothing new, this is the first I've heard of Tmobile blocking all tethering from all users that do not have a tethering plan.
I've never had a need for tethering my laptop yet, but I've always looked at it as a nice emergency backup for retrieving my general email, or some other limited connection need. Kind of like I haven't used a dial up connection to access the internet in years, but if I needed to I have 100 free dial up connection hrs a month from my high speed cable internet provider.
I really hate to see Tmobile take away something like free limited tethering (used on a very limited basis) from everyone just because some people want to use it as their primary hi speed internet connection for free. That is a paid service that I, and many other people pay a lot of money for every month.
Edit: I should have known that Tmobile customer service would have the answer. If a customer, like me, with very low data use a month, had a need to tether a laptop temporally, I was told I could call TMO customer service, tell them I want the service added and I only need to connect on an emergency basis, and will call to cancel the service tomorrow, I could do that and it would wind up costing me about 50 to 75 cents for that one time use.
I was told this was not to buy one day of use and burn through a huge amount of data, and then cancel it, but to meet the limited emergency needs of a customer it could be done. So I guess I haven't lost anything but 50 cents.
