Default Voicemail when traveling?

How do you avoid getting charged when people call you/go to yoir voicemail when you're traveling. When I went to Canada I got 2 calls and was charged for both even though they didn't leave a voicemail.

So what do I do?

Couldn't tell you; I don't do anything differently than if I were in the US. Maybe use some other service to dial the VM access number.

@mattglobal

I use Youmail. I just wondered if there was some way to forward calls so I won't get charged everytime someone calls me and I don't pick up.

I'm guessing you got charged because your phone was roaming on the local Canadian GSM carrier when the calls were connected -- even though you didn't answer them. Like Ami said, turn your phone off so you aren't roaming.

Yes, I know turning the phone off is the obvious solution but I may not want to do that since I use the international email package.

So there's no special way to forward calls so I won't charged?

D'oh, I forgot about sending the calls directly to voicemail. Open the phone app, press the Menu key and choose Options, Call Forwarding. Checkmark Forward All Calls, then click where it says "Do Not Forward" and change it to the voicemail number instead.

I use this at work when I'm on-call, to forward all calls from the team's Nokia phone (puke) over to my BB.

They do charge you if people call ur phone when you're out of the country and they go VM. My phone was in my pocket and I didn't even see the calls in, let alone pick them up. I also didn't call VM.
