Default Upgrading T-Mo 8120 to OS v4.5

I am seriously contemplating with upgrading my t-mobile 8120 to OS v4.5, since the official release probably won't come out for a long while. I have read through the tutorial in the FAQ section several times and believe I can do this.

I have also read other people's feedback that going to an unoffical 4.5 makes the UMA handoff not work (call drops when leaving wifi zone and handing to regular cell tower), which I am willing to deal with. I don't use UMA calling much anymore, as I only turn my wifi on when needed to conserve battery.

Are there any other drawbacks on upgrading that I am unaware of? Is it worth it for those that have already done this?

That is the only issue I have had. Currently the 8120 is running 4.5.0.124

I recently got back from India and I must say that I am quite disappointed in T-Mobile's inability to provide an official update. So I decided enough was enough and upgraded my phone myself. I guess you want something done do it yourself.

Anyway I haven't noticed many issues. Excellent memory resources in the newest OS (but I also used CrackMem to remove stock images and ringtones but left all the alerts and notices).

I leave Wi-Fi on because most places I go (work, home, hangouts) have Wi-Fi and the speed is great and you obviously get UMA. I haven't had any issues with UMA switching on phone calls but I do not think I have given it proper circumstances (i.e. lack of Wi-Fi) to test it. I mean my God here in Atlanta entire cities and counties are going free Wi-Fi (go Sky Blue) so I need to find a way to get it to go from UMA to EDGE or otherwise to test this potential problem.

I guess the biggest thing for me with upgrading was the added memory management. It seems to manage the available memory much more efficiently and we all know that is a good thing on the Pearls.

The pros of os 4.5 far out weigh the UMA to EDGE drop.

cool sounds good so far. =)

I have a quick question regarding step 7 in the upgrade process in the tutorial. if you guys can shed some light that would be great.

it said: 7. Wipe your handheld HowTo Wipe with JL_cmdr or use CrackMem

does that mean i should use CrackMem not not wipe with JL_cmdr? or is wiping still recommended?

I think the thing is CrackMem/Util does exactly what JL_Cmdr does as far as wiping the handset. I used the directions to a Tee but Pete6 explains CrackUtil as offering a user interface that is friendlier to users and offers a heavier, more extensive help system to explain what you are about to do.

You can read about Pete6's (the author) directions and guidance here (as well as download the proggy):

http://forums.crackberry.com/f35/crackutil-85617/ - CrackUtil

http://forums.crackberry.com/f2/crac...eleased-52044/ - Latest CrackMem version download.

They do have nice interfaces, but also if you follow the directions set aside for updating your phone to the Tee you will have no issues. I actually printed them out and went over them several times to become familiar with them. I think the thing that got me to finally upgrade to a non-official OS was the fact that, despite all you COULD do, it IS reversible if you follow the directions (backing up).

I did the upgrade and love it. It was worth it. I do not use wifi so I have yet to notice any drops and the memory incresae is great. Follow the directions and enjoy.

Thanks for posting, that is the exact question I've been waiting to see asked.

If you do upgrade what version of 4.5 are you going to use? Not know what was the best for us was keeping me from downloading any.

So 4.5.0.124 is it?

.124 was what I planned to use, just because it was the latest. I am not sure if that's the right decision though. Anyone have any advice on what version of 4.5 to use?

Guess I'm late, using .110. No issues with the handoff where cell coverage is good. It's horrible at my house so it's an issue I just bought a router with DD-WRT, waiting for it. Maybe the power boost will help the transition between uma and edge.

I'm going to just backup and dl 4.5 tonight. If it is eff'ed up for me I can always just download the one I'm on from tmo. I'll let you know how it goes prolly tomorrow since I only usually mess around on here when I'm killing time at work.

i tried installing .124 last night, but when i tried to install the OS onto my computer i got an error that asks for "data1.cab" near the end of the installation. so i decided not to mess around and went for the .110 version from at&t instead.

the wipe device from CrackMem worked funny for me. i am not sure if i did anything wrong, but when i clicked "wipe device" it booted AppLoader with everything unchecked. so i thought that's how it performs the wipe and followed the on screen instructions.

however, after it is completed, my screen is stuck in a permanent hourglass. although it seems to be a little different than the "brick" that blackberry101 describes because it's not in a loop of disconnect/connect to my computer.

at this time, DM no longer see it as connected and cannot connect, but CrackMem seems to be able to still. i decided to go with JL_cmdr to try and wipe it again and that seems to work better. i got the 507 error as expected right away. after that it's pretty much smooth sailing installing the new OS via AppLoader.

overall i am very impressed so far and wish i had done this sooner. i got more memory back because the OS install is cleaner (24mb). html email is awesome! so is streaming youtube and online radio. connected okay to EDGE and UMA networks, haven't tested the handoff yet, and might not be in a realistic situation to bother with this either.

hope i don't regret this choice and find more faults as time goes on. =)

Although, i now have 2 t-zone icons. i hid both of them, but does anyone know why this happens or how to prevent this in the future? also some of the icons that i originally hid are still there hidden even though they should not have been re-installed? stuff like Trooper Typing and Handango InHand? should i have unhid them before i did the backup/wipe/upgrade/restore?
