Talking Upgrading to Bold 9700 and Increasing Data Package Fee!

So first off let me start by saying I am in love with T-Mobile...I have great service, coverage, prices are great. Period.

Now, I've been with t-mobile for 5 years and the past 2 years I've added my parents to my line as a Family Plan. I've been waiting for one full year now to upgrade to the Bold 9700 (especially since its in white!).

So I call, ready to upgrade, credit card in head, etc. They lady informs me she has to change my GRANDFATHERED $19.99 Data Plan to the $24.99. I ask her if there's anyway to avoid it, she says the computer won't allow her too.

Now I love t-mobile and I am not one to huff and puff about minor things but I was dissapointed! Why should I pay an extra $5 a month for a GRANDfathered data package just because I want to continue to stay with your company? I just thanked her for her help and said I want to cancel the purchase and that I will just move my Blackberry line to another provider since I am OUT of contract but that I will allow my parents (whose lines I pay for) to stay since they don't need/use blackberries.

She tells me to hold on and says there's a department she will connect me with that will try to make me keep my $19.99 plan. After a minute a guy from customer relations comes, thanks me for being a client for 5 years and says he will let me keep my plan. WOW! Talk about customer service! He actually said "we're not going to punish you for staying with T-mobile for 2 more years by charging you an extra $5 after you've been a good customer".

I was floored. I wasn't saying I was going to leave T-mobile just so I could keep my $19.99 deal...I was just dissapointed and was thinking of leaving. I work in customer service too so I know we can always go the extra step to help clients within reasoning...and I must comment T-Mobile for going that extra step in saving me $5 a month.

Has anybody else heard of having to change your grandfathered $19.99 Data Package to $24.99 just to upgrade?

When I toyed with the G2, I couldn't get them to change my BB unlimited back to the $24.99 -- I had to go back with the $30, even though I had the $25 one for months before. I bitched and moaned, and got nowhere fast.

Life's a pitch, and then you buy.

If you're an older customer, you can easily go to Retentions and get to keep your old plan when you upgrade.

For example, I'm on a single line and have the 34.99 BB web/message plan, which is basically 19.99 for data, 14.99 for messages. They don't offer it anymore but I got it through Retentions and I'm on an older plan, so I'll be able to get it for Android too in the future, when I upgrade.

Yeah, fight with retentions.
Also your old phone is on EDGE Data, some carriers charge more for 3G HSPA Service, and this is where they might be nailing you.

check it out and ask alot of questions

The 19.99 plan was old and they have been wanting to "phase it out" a while ago then they introduced the 24.99 (and higher!) plans.

All plans work with 3G/HSPA+ though, provided you have the proper phone/coverage. T-Mo isn't like Sprint who charges you for the "privilege" of using 4G.

I think the cheaper plans were phased out because other carriers were starting charge a lot for data, and T-Mo wants a piece of that pie.

Ah, see up here in the north, Bell made some people switch and get different plans for the HSPA network.

I was paying $19.99 for BB Data and $4.99 for 400 text messages, he says he's going to combine the two for $24.99 because now the data/text messaging plans come together...is that true?

Also I'm confused, how much is the BB Data now? I know I have the $19.99 plan (thank God) but as I saidthey told me $24.99 but I see some people saying $30? So is it NOW $24.99 or $30 for new customers?

We had the same thing happen when my husband upgraded to his Vibrant from the BB. He didn't quibble with them in the store. I was on the phone with customer care before we got home. We each have $19.99 data plans

You're lucky they offered you to take the 24.99 plan. They made me get the 29.99 plan when I upgraded to my Bold.

Yeah actually you end paying the same thing, MJ. The guy was nice and gave you the older 24.99 plan, which includes unlimited web AND 400 messages. So pretty much the same thing.

Currently, if you're on an Even More plan, you pay 30 for data. If you're on Even More Plus, it's $25.

If you're on an older plan, you can easily talk to ANY phone CS (with maybe a few exceptions) and get the 24.99 plan or 34.99 (which includes unlimited messages). They seem to be happy to give these plans to older customers who aren't on the EM/EM+ plans.

The 19.99 one though is pretty much gone.

When I upgraded my phones recently, I was transferred to retentions and the lady I spoke with gave me the $20 data plan, though I ended up upgrading to a mytouch 3g (which I received for free). So I'm sure you should be able to get the $20 data plan, particularly if you've been with Tmo for awhile.

Best of luck.

I must have been one of the lucky ones as I have EM plan and only pay 25 per phone for data. Never asked and I didn't have data on old phones, so I can't complain, better believe though if they do try to raise it next year, I will be talking to retentions, lol! Always better to talk to them online than at a store, unless lucky.
