Default Upgraded to 9780 -- Forced Data Plan Upgrade

I upgraded my old BlackBerry with a $20 unlimited data plan to the new Bold 9780 at a T-Mobile corporate store. After I left I received a text message that my data plan changed. I login online, and low and behold they changed my data plan from $20 to $30 a month without even telling me.

I reviewed my contract extension documents they gave me and it says nothing of this in there.. only that I'm required to have a data plan.

I went back to the store, and they told me I cant keep my grandfathered plan, I have to upgrade to the new $30 plan if I want a discount on the phone.

WTF? When did this start happening? I thought I got a discount because it's been years since my last upgrade?

That wasn't right. They should have told you if you needed to change it.

Call 611, get a rep, and tell them that your data plan was changed when you upgraded without you knowing and you do not want to pay the $30 when you previously only paid $20. I'm guessing you're a long time customer so say you want the $20 Preferred Blackberry Web plan. If they can't add it, tell them to please transfer you to customer loyalty as you are a longtime customer and this is a loyalty offering so they need to help you on this.

Precisely what Artemis said. To tell you that you must upgrade your data plan is one thing. To just do it without telling you is garbage. Call and request a switch back

Ridiculous! That would enrage me too. I've been with TMO for over 9 years now and also have that $20 grandfathered plan. DEFINITELY call 611 and get transferred to retentions.

Good luck!

That's like when I went to ATT and got one of my upgrades and I had a combo text and voice in 1 bundle and the dude proceeded to separate them when I never asked him to do anything but buy a damn phone. I got home and called 611 cuz that made my bill go up and they corrected it for me

I almost had to do the same thing. At least they warned me in the store that it would happen. I called 611 and even they wouldn't have been able to keep my grandfathered plan. I went back to the store ready to pay more for getting less, but a different rep put everything through and it kept my old plan.

Same thing happened to my husband when he moved to his Galaxy. I called Customer Care and they switched it back, but still charged the interim time prorated. In other words, we had 2 days at the $30 rate and the rest at the $20 rate.

Default Same thing I was told today.

I'm 2 months away from my upgrade time. I considered doing an early upgrade today as my LCD was damaged when my phone fell. I'd gotten a pretty good deal for the 9780, but was told my $20/ month is "not compatible" with an upgrade.
That extra 10 bucks/ month adds up to 240 over the contract term! Why would I do that when for a little extra I could get a phone off contract?
Any Tmo reps around please weigh in.

They seem to be phasing out the OLD 19.99 BB plan. This is called "Pref BiS"

There is a loyalty plan out there called "Preferred Blackberry Unlimited Web" for $20. I have the Android web. This is a current retentions offer. They should switch you to that.

I have a family plan and last week I upgraded one line to the 9780 and the guy in the store also switched my data plan to the $30 without telling me.
I called up T-mobile today; and the first rep couldn't change it back so I asked to be transferred to customer loyalty. The customer loyalty rep was able to change the data plan back down to $25. He also then offered to me and put in a request to change it on the 19th to the $20 preferred data plan.

Yeah you have to go through Customer Loyalty to get any of these old plans, for the most part.

I upgraded from my 8320 to 9780 on Black Friday in a corporate store and was able to keep my "Preferred BIS web/email 19.99, 400 txt msg. $4.99 and Unlimited Loyalty plan $49.99. I told them if I had to upgrade to the $30 BIS, I wouldn't do it. I got want I wanted.

I upgraded both lines on our family plan yesterday with a BB 9780 and a MyTouch 4G. Previously we both had BB Curves on the $19.99 unlimited web+email plans, and we had both been eligible for upgrades since the summer. The sales rep at the Tmo corp store told me that both web plans would had to be upgraded to the $30 plans if we wanted to get new phones. I told him that I would somehow understand if the line getting the android would have a higher web price since it is switched to a different platform. But I told him that I see no reason to pay more for the same BB unlimited web plan which I already have and be punished for tying myself to TMo for another 2 years. I suggested he should call customer retentions. He happily did so and was very good at it, telling the rep on the phone that I was going to look elsewhere if I was not able to keep my current BB web pricing.
Bottomline: I was able to keep our current family plan with all features (incl. the unlimited web plans for $20 and also our $2.99 txt msg packages for 300 msgs each) at exactly the same price as previously, and that goes for BOTH lines including the one that was switched to android.
And of course, we got the BOGO deal with this transaction.
I am an extremely happy customer. Thank you T-Mobile, and thank you to the awesome rep at the corporate store in Manhattan!
