Default Updated O.S.?

So I know there are a few TMo reps cruising around... Any news on when and if TMo is going to update the OS? I'm really leary of updating with a leaked OS on my 9700...

Don't hesitate with a leaked OS. They're all "leaked" until a service provider decides to use it. Its all the same. Just make sure you know what you're doing when you upgrade your OS. And always do a back up.

T-Mo doesn't update OSs very often. The stock OS is not that bad. It's actually been a lot more stable than other stock OSs.

Just upgrade to one released by one of the other carriers.

I can almost guarentee you won't see an OS update from TMO for the 8320. I believe AT&T has .182 or something out.

My 9700 still has the stock .330 OS. I've been so tempted to try another build, but in the end decided not to for a couple reasons. First off, it's almost universally accepted that .330 wins on battery. Anything newer isn't as good, it seems, and this is important to me. Secondly, it starts a slippery slope- I install one OS, and am either happy or not. Then the next latest and greatest comes out... should I go with that one now? Or hold out? Where does it end? Lastly, I'm in a unique position where I've been carrying around the same working TCP/IP service books for the past few phones, and I don't want to risk botching the working internet-without-data-plan I have by wiping my phone.

But if you're bored, or don't mind experimenting, or are just a techie who wants the latest thing, by all means try one out. There's a lot of hubbub about the latest .536 leak, and most of the reviews are positive. Just don't expect it to cure cancer or solve world hunger; we're talking about unnamed tweaks and bug fixes, not a major upgrade. There's a reason these builds are 5.0.0.x, not 5.1 or even 5.0.1. The biggest "features" I see praise for are that the browser (may or may not) be almost two seconds faster on loading, bootup time (in some cases) might be a minute less than what it was, the lock and mute buttons are changed (which some people hate, and others love), and the thumbnail image previews load quicker (though may be pixelated)

And as always take everything you read with a grain of salt, because as with any computer, one out of every so many upgrades will be done wrong, or have errors, or random glitches which don't reflect the actual overall software... and conversely, freshly reinstalling any OS tends to make things snappier and run quicker.

I usually change my OS anytime there is a new OS available. Most of the time it really is of no significant benefit. I'm currently running .536 on my T-Mobile 9700. Browser speed is improved, UMA connectivity is not as reliable. Battery life is not as consistent as .330.

Unless you like to tinker and/or need to improve your browsing experience as the cost of a reduction in your UMA connectivity and battery management, stick with .330 as it is an excellent build.

This is truly an excellent post and all your points are exceptionally accurate.

While all your points are spot on, the issue of .330 being the best on battery management is really notable. .330 has the best battery management of any OS ever built.

Great comments.

I couldn't agree with you more. I upgraded from .330 to .442, although I was rather hesitant to at first, worried about using another carriers OS on my TMO phone. I was very happy with .442, but after seeing how easy the upgrade was, I decided to give .536 a whirl. Thus far, I am not impressed. I agree with you completely that UMA is not as reliable (which I need, with there being no service in the building where I work).

I plan on downgrading tomorrow.....now the question as to what to downgrade to....back to .330 or .442?

Maybe a new OS will leak between now and then

If you upgrade to a leaked OS, you need to know if the leaked OS is for a carrier that supports UMA. A lot of carriers do not, thus the issues you see with leaked OSs not playing well with UMA. Heck, even the official .330 does not play well with UMA.

I think .330 is probably the best OS out there for T-Mobile 9700s. Might want to give the .536 another day or two before changing. My UMA issues seem to be getting better.

Funny thing about new OSs. There seems to be a break-in period where the OS settles down and starts working better on the device. Battery hasn't improved but UMA seems to be a tad better.

Give it another day before you switch.

Isn't the update supposed to correct the "My Faves" icon not being on screen?
