Uma/wifi Tmobile question

I'm not sure if I should ask in tmo forum or wifi. But since it's tmo wifi I'll ask here.

So technically there is UMA and WIFI calling which is slightly different. So if my account says FREE UMA calling will I actually get free wifi calling if I switch to android.... Since android is wifi and not UMA


And before this cause a big brew haha.... When I say FREE i mean no money AND NO MINUTES are charged.
I seriously don't want to see all the "WIFI IS FREE for everyone " comments.

I know some other people on another tech forum who have the free UMA calling (for 9.99 or whatever) and the min are still free on android. I don't remember their phones but the one person had a mytouch 4G.

I have unlimited min but if I look at my minutes, the wifi calling ones are marked with a (U) for UMA minutes. They are billed the same way.

"Unlimited UMA Calling" is a now-grandfathered T-Mo plan option that provided unlimited minutes for calls that are initiated/received on UMA.

"Free UMA Calling" probably means there is no EXTRA charge to connect calls over the UMA network versus the mobile network. UMA calls would still accrue minutes based on your plan options and time of day. UMA functionality is built into BlackBerry and a few older Samsung and Nokia phones. A few months ago there was buzz about a T-Mobile UMA app coming to Android devices. Unlike handsets with built-in UMA support, the rumored Android app will not handoff calls between UMA and mobile networks.

That kinda answers that they are using UMA and WIFI interchangeably but I'm trying to figure out the billing with structured minuted plans and I THINK you have unlimited don't you.


I need to know if the people with the FREE add on are getting their minutes sucked away from their bucket when on on wifi and android. I KNOW on blackberry I won't get my minutes sucked away on stuctured minute plans.

I have the free add on (Android app for Wifi calling) with my G2. And yes it takes the mins out of your plans bucket of mins. But I have 1000 mins so it's not that big a deal since I also have MyFaves for my most frequented numbers I call. (thank goodness for grandfathered plan features).

Mine comes out and I have a blackberry.

I need UMA as it is a signal booster for our apartment and if I didn't have it, my phone as far as voice goes would be a brick!

Yeah... i decided I'm sticking with BB to get everything I want for a great price.

Android just can't beat my free no bucket minute wifi calls, grandfathered minute plan, push email.

But what about people who have the UMA add on with android? I'm telling ya - their UMA min are free.

Blkbear said that he/she has the free add on and then said Android wifi calling app in (). This is not the same as the UMA package. I have the android wifi calling app but because I don't have the UMA add on, the min come out of my monthly bucket.

What makes things difficult is that the free no deduction UMA/WiFi calling plan is a grandfathered feature and because of high employee turn around, not many CSRs know how our can transfer that feature when customers switch devices. We had the grandfathered plan when we haf the employee plan, but when we covered to a consumer plan, we lost that feature.
