There has never been any real talk that T-Mobile was going to drop the feature outright. The problem came from the popularity of UMA and the decline in revenues due to it's popularity. The add on feature cost of $9.99 was not covering the losses of so many, virtually free phone calls.
The other issue has been in the decline of UMA available handsets. The line up from manufacturers has dwindled with RIM being the only major manufacturer to produce UMA capable handsets. So with one manufacturer delivering lousy delivery of both UMA and 3G, and you have a recipe for urgency on the part of T-Mobile to drive devices that meet their consumers' needs with devices and features that they need.
