| | UMA Calling with non-Tmobile phone
I get spotty reception in my home. Currently, I use an 8900 and use UMA via my wireless internet connection. If I were to purchase a Storm and unlock it, could I still use UMA calling? Or, would I have to connect via a mobile network?

I believe that all blackberry's are able to do UMA calling as long as the network supports it. So i would think the storm would work for UMA calling on the T-Mobile network.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | You're overlooking one big fact. The Storm does not have wifi. The Storm 2 does, if that's what you're referring to. I've seen an occasional post about getting UMA to work on unlocked devices, but they've all been devices that have UMA on T-Mobile, such as an unlocked AT&T 8900. The Storm 2 doesn't have UMA support natively, so I don't know that it will work.

I've heard of some non-Tmo phones being modified to use UMA on tmobile...usually I've heard of the ATT 8900 that can use tmo UMA...but this is because it has the hardware to do so. Not all phones have the hardware required to do UMA.

The way it was explained to me, "UMA" & "Wi-Fi" are different things... A phone might have wi-fi capability but still not be able to make a "UMA call"... All UMA capable phones have wi-fi but not all wi-fi phone has uma capability...

The only current UMA Blackberry's i know of are the 8900 and 9700...
Its not just a software feature or every phone with wifi would have UMA also built in as an addition selling feature

UMA calling requires coding that only T-Mobile phones have. The T-Mobile 8900 and the T-Mobile 9700 are the only two phone that will support UMA.

Not entirely true - there are others (but they are all Tmo provided)..... Blackberry 8320 is UMA enabled too for example. Also, there is at least one samsung that Tmo offers with UMA calling.

As far as I know, many of the T-Mobile BBs support UMA. As for dumbphones, you have a slew of Nokia, Samsung, and SE phones that support it.
You're right..there is a difference between Wi-Fi and UMA.
If you want to get a UMA product, you need to look for "Wi-Fi calling" in the features, not just "Wi-Fi" or "Wi-Fi capable". Wi-Fi calling = UMA.

SE has yet to make any UMA enabled phones, which is a shame. All BBs since the 8820 have had UMA.

Gah, I'm sorry, you're right...No SE phones have UMA.
For some reason, I was thinking that the old SE 506 flip phone had UMA but I just looked it up and I was wrong...
