saw an email memo sent to Tmo about when the update will be ready,no uma at launch because too many dropped calls going from uma to the networks, this verision on uma will have smooth hand over no lost calls, they might even rename it wifi calling and not uma.

That's great news! Only reason i haven't upgraded to the new 9900 is lack of UMA, but when it becomes available I'll finally give up my trusty 9700.

It doesn't look like the 9900 will be able to transition from WiFi to Broadband like the 9700 can due the transceivers hardware & software handshake architecture. Sounds like you will be able to call via Wifi, but you won't be able to call via wifi, loose the 802.11 signal and have the phone transition to broadband like the 9700 will. It sounds like it was not part of the design requirements for the phone given that it would have the 4G transceiver. The carriers also didn't want this feature as they were losing $$$, hence it wasn't part the the design requirements.

Sounds like RIM has spent more time listening to the carriers than the true customer.

Losing the ability to do the handover is a downer, but not a showstopper.

Can anyone confirm whether this new wifi calling feature will still allow no roaming charges for data / calls on wifi?

Now that WiFI calling seems confirmed with 7.1, I wonder whether wifi calling will be limited to T-Mo in the US as was UMA (with one unimportant exception) or whether say Sprint will also have WiFI calling. I also wonder whether WiFi calling will work from abroad in the same manner as did UMA.

Any of you gurus know?

From daggerlach's post, it sounds like you can't start a call over Wi-Fi and then switch to mobile network within the same call. You'll still be able to use UMA, but the hand-off when you get in reach of your network may not be as smooth (or happen at all).

Raino,

I've heard that TMO won't even offer UMA with the 9900. Looks like TMO want everyone off the program by slowly migrating everyone to new phones.

I
It is clear that t mobile will not have UMA. They may however have wifi calling which just doesn't hook back up to a cell if you get out of the WiFi area. Where did you hear TMo might not have WiFi calling if you did in fact hear that. Thanks
