Also, would they be stuck using the phone number I have now? | You can do a transfer of responsibility for that one line, now whether or not it can be transferred to someone else's family plan, that would be a question for customer service. I have friends with family plans that do this when someone on the plan wants to take control and start paying for their own plan and keep the number they have been using for years. But they can also get a new number if they want as well.
As for the upgrade, once the line becomes a single line, it starts out fresh as a new line. So any upgrades, you would want to do them BEFORE it becomes a seperate line, off of your current family plan. But it might depend on how long before the upgrade term is for that one line, is up. Quite a few people lose out on possible upgrades, unless they fight for them.
One family I know, changed responsibilty for a couple of lines, only to find out those line lost their upgrades a couple of months later, so they told TMO, to put everything back the way it was, and rather than do that, they allowed them to use the upgrades, instead of the hassle of changing everything back to how it was before any changes were made.
