Default Torch data problems

I've come to Vegas for CES and wanted to be able to stay in contact with friends and family.

I unlocked my Rogers (Canada) Torch and got a T-Mobile SIM and a pre-paid plan with unlimited talk/txt (working) and 100mb of data (not working).

My phone says 'edge' for the connection which means no data. When connected to wifi I can browse but no e-mail or BBM. I don't have a connection to the Blackberry servers either.

I've done a battery pull and a service book resend request (no response) with no luck.

Any ideas?

Did you change the APN?

You need to get a BlackBerry Data Plan for email and BBM to work. Ask them for an Even More Plus Plan.

@Artemis68: I never had a APN configured for Rogers. What does T-Mobile use?

@Motorcycle Mama: I'll give T-Mobile a call and mention that.

@Artemis68: I tried two T-Mobile APN's and didn't have any luck. I'll try calling T-Mobile next.

BB data isn't available with the prepaid plans, unfortunately. Even More Plus is the only way to get full data usage on a temporary basis.

I called up T-Mobile and the guy I spoke with fixed me up. He said a feature was missing from my account and added it for me. Five minutes later I had data. As far as I'm aware no change to my plan was made and no extra charges. The guy said data was data on a pre-paid plan.

Thanks everyone!

Just a follow-up now that I'm back home.

NorrisCell was correct. With a pre-paid plan you can't get Blackberry data only regular data. This means no BES or BBM connectivity. This makes pre-paid useless if your phone is activated against a BES because all your traffic then tries to go through that BES.

The reason it worked for me (on the first day) was because the Rep I spoke with was nice enough to flag my account with Blackberry data even though he shouldn't have. 24 hours later T-Mobiles system automatically figured it out and took the flag off my account.

If you're traveling to the US get a FlexPay Plan and make sure you set it up ahead of time if you can or go to a T-Mobile store. I went to Frys and the guy was useless. Calling T-Mobile Support was an exercise in patience. It seems none of the departments talk to each other and every time you get transferred the call quality drops to the point where you can't understand the rep on the other end of the line.

The "Even More Plus Plan" is prepaid and includes BlackBerry Data.

Funny how no one at T-Mobile mentioned that.... Any of the 6 times I called them asking for Blackberry data.

Even More Plus can be Flexpay monthy (prepaid) or just regular postpaid. You have to ask for Flexpay Monthly because it's really not readily offered. Roaming on AT&T would have been useless because AT&T was horrendous at CES.
