Default Tmobile switching to 2100Mhz

I talked to an engineer today,Who works with Tmobile and he told me that Tmobile is planning on using their 2100Mhz 3G service for both upstream and downstream in the next 6months to 1 year. That Tmobile only acquired the 1700Mhz band so they could enter a contract for roaming with the Japanese.
Forgive me if I didn't word this right ,He was speaking a language I didn't understand,But I thought I would share it here and see if makes sense with any of you all.

Basically what he told me was that in the near future devices such as the iPhone and other 3G enabled devices would work on Tmobile USA.

That would be fantastic, but I'll believe it when I see "3G" on my Bold here in the US.

Very cool. That is pretty exciting because it means that a 3G BB will be coming too inevitably. Maybe a 2009 launch of Onyx/Driftwood is eminent afterall.

Wow, this almost sounds too good to be true but it would be great if this could happen!

That would be great. So many phones already have support for the 2100 band already. Maybe I'll switch back to T-Mo if that really happens.

Sorry if this a dumb question but how will this affect current 3G tmo phones? Will they be able to use the new frequency? And does this whole change mean that tmo will drop the old frequency or will just use both?

I doubt that there has ever been a single GSM 3G phone sold that did not work in the 2100 band. It's used in just about every country in the world, and the T-Mobile 3G phones sold to date have had 1700 and 2100 functionality.

It is not a true statement, especially if you are not only referred to tmobile's current line up. There are so many ATT's 3g phone don't have 2100 band. Some of Nokia NAM version phones only have 850/1900 bands

Is T-Mobile's 2100 the same 2100 that was supposed to be off by a few megahertz from everyone else's 2100 back when they first got it? Did they change that or does it still mean 2100 for T-Mobile (US) is different then 2100 for Europe/Asia/Wherever?
