Default Tmobile Service and the G2 Phone...

I currently have a blackberry 8530 5.0 OS on Cricket (don't criticize me). While I love my BB, it's getting old and I'm ready for something new. I considered a new bb, but I'm ready to break out.

I am in absolute love with the G2. I am 95% sure it is the phone I want. I am going to go with T-Mobile service also.
I'm aware of the regular plans and the "even more PLUS" plans... I was just wondering which is better. (I'll be getting an individual). I know the phone is cheaper if you get a regular plan with the two year agreement. ($500 vs. $150). But is the two year agreement worth it?
ALSO- big point- I believe the G2 has Google Voice. That can make calls from your phone without using minutes, right? How does that work and is it as spiffy and useful as it sounds? Any problems with it?
LASTLY- How is the coverage? On this fourm, I've only read bad things about T-Mobile. I don't travel too much...

Any other notable information about the G2 or T-mobile service?
I am almost positive I'll be getting this phone by December.

Thanks CB

The G2 is an awesome phone. I'd definitely get it for myself if I weren't under contract right now.

Honestly, get the Even More Plus plan. Yes, you pay full price for the phone but you can break it up into $20 payments over 20 months. Then, you're paying as much as an Even More plan. With the Even More plan, you pay $20 more per month, plus $200 for the phone. Not really worth it IMO since you can break up the cost of the phone into 20 months with Even More Plus.

Google Voice rocks. Yes, it doesn't use your minutes. You can even send text messages with it and it doesn't use your text messages.

Check out T-Mobile's coverage maps. If it's good in your area, GO for it! Better idea: get T-Mobile and if the coverage is bad in your area, you can return the phone and cancel within 14 days and it won't cost you a thing. It's a good way to "test drive" a carrier.

Thanks!! That helped a lot! I get a 20% discount on my bill, through work, so would that include the $20 phone payments. And do I have to make a "down payment" on the phone. Also, when I go in to sign up, am I going to pay outrageous costs, to get me started? I'd like more information on the start-up process.

So, if I got the plan with 500 minutes, I'd be solid with google voice? That plan is $79.99 + 20, so 100 a month. What am I looking at with all of the taxes and what not?
I have an old sim card (years old), but I don't know if I can use it. I want to keep my number.

Sorry for the over load of questions

Yes, you have to do a downpayment...which is $20 so it's not that bad. You may have to pay an activation fee (bet 18-35 dollars) but since you have a discount, they will probably waive that for you. That's it, really when it comes to starting fees.

In terms of keeping your number (from Boost, right?) Why not just port it? You can port your number to T-Mobile. You can do it online (available when you check out) or in store.

I would get a new SIM from T-Mobile with your account. They will not charge you for that.

The EM+ plan with 500 min is not 79.99, it's 59.99. 59.99 for 500 min, unlim text, unlim data. So you'd be paying 79.99 total when you factor in 20 for the phone payment each month.

I have no idea where you live so I don't know what taxes will be. I spend a lot of my time now in PA (college) and I pay about 9-10$ for taxes.

A few things to add:

- Double check that discount percentage. I've never seen a 20% discount through TMO. 18% is the highest I've seen, and that's reserved for military. Most corporate discounts cap at 15%

- If you go with EM+, you will not get a monthly discount for your employer. You will still get your activation fee waived

- If you go with EM+, the phone will be $500/20 payments, which equals $25 a month if you're approved for a high enough credit line. If you are granted a credit line of $500 or more, you'll pay the first $25 payment plus all taxes in store to get started ($25 + ~$40 = $65 total). If you get approved for less than $500, you'll pay the difference over your credit line plus all taxes. For example, if they give you a $300 credit line, you'll pay the $200 difference plus the ~$40 in taxes at the store

- Taxes on the bill vary extremely widely. Back home (Seattle) taxes were ~18%. Here in Vegas, they're ~3%

- As mentioned above, try it out. I've traveled a lot of places with my TMO service and there were only a few it didn't work well in. If you go with EM+, you actually have 30 days to return the phone and service.

Let us know if there are any other questions

Hey norris, do you happen to know what the tax rate is for hawaii? I never really understood because the tax portion seems to stay the same but the universal service fund goes from $1 something to as high as $8 on one of my lines- and I get charged four times for it for having a 3-line family plan.
