| | TMo UMA 9700 with .545 OS
Just an update for any of you fellow T-Mobilers who use the 9700 and rely a lot on UMA connections.
I recently updated my OS to the new .545 leak. Let me say, I usually am not overwhelmed with changes in OS releases and find most of them to be a waste of time to do. Not so with .545.
This OS is a UMA monster. I have been very impressed with the ability of this OS to find, grab and hold onto UMA connections. This sucker is quick to find UMA connections and once connected, just won't let go. I've never used an OS on any BlackBerry device that seems as good as .545 in getting and maintaining UMA connections.
I use UMA a lot. I use it at home and at work. With the new .545, I N E V E R am not connected to UMA anywhere I have a UMA profile set up.
If you rely on UMA, I cannot recommend this OS more. My experience in using it for the last week has been very impressive with UMA connections.
It is also about twice as fast with browser connections as any earlier OS release.
If you like UMA, you should love .545.

I can't agree with you more. I too use UMA both at home and at work, and have not dropped one call since upgrading to .545.
I have also had much better success switching from UMA to 3G while on a call and it not dropping.
Now just to wait for the next OS update to include the new browser!

Thanks for posting this, berryite.
I just upgraded to .536 and was reluctant to upgrade again so soon but now I think I'm going to. I'll be able to try out UMA during Spring break.
My home is old and fairly large, so my family has 2 wireless routers on the network to give wifi to the whole house. sometimes UMA is a little weird when I switch between routers. Any idea on how this OS is when it comes to switching between wifi networks?

I am going to jump to this OS later tonight. Thanks for the information Berryrite and everyone.
I really never had a problem with UMA with my 9700 running on .442 as far as drop call or loosing connection is concern.
However, when I leave UMA to 3G during a phone call, it usually switches over to GPRS and it never grabs a hold of 3G till I hang up my phone. So, I then can't use my voice and data at the same time. But my call never drops. The hand over from UMA to the network has been flawless. If I start my call with 3G, lately I found TMO 3G to be very solid and am able to take benefit of voice and data while I was traveling last week.
Anyhow, I am glad to see that this build addresses switch over from UMA to 3G issue.
Cheers

I've done .442 and .536 and am now on .545 as you know and I can tell you that .545 is the clear winner. I continue to be amazed about my UMA connections. I even get a solid UMA connection OUTSIDE the building I work in and before with 442/536 I'd get spotty coverage inside. I walked a block away the other night before I lost the UMA connection from my office. This .545 blows me away with how effective it is in grabbing and holding onto UMA connections. T-Mobile USA is nuts if they don't adopt this OS right away. Any UMA carrier oughta be getting this OS adopted right away.
My experience with .536 was not good for UMA. So this was a very pleasant change. I'd recommend doing the upgrade as soon as possible.

Why was berryite banned?
I looked over his last few posts and saw nothing that should have gotten him banned from the site.
I know he speaks his mind, but he is always helpful here.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | I don't think that you can update directly with your 9700 OTA since this is not TMO official realeased OS. You will have to go to post about updating this OS from 9700 thread or OS Beta discussion thread. Just follow step by step to update OS and you should be good to go.

| | UMA just works!
Living in a T-Mobile dead zone makes me dependent on UMA so if it weren't for UMA I wouldn't have T-mobile. My hopes have been for better support of it with this phone. I have been reading about how this OS works well with UMA so I took the plunge and upgraded. Everyone has been dead-on with the reports, it doesn't take minutes for my phone to switch over to UMA once I am in a hot-zone, it takes less than 3 seconds. I'm not sure if they decreased the time threshold that the phone "searches" for a UMA signal but whatever they did it just works. I'll be sticking with this OS.
Thanks!
Mark

I just downloaded this OS three days ago because I want to test out how well it connects to UMA. I am a bit disappointed because I am not getting the same raving results you all are getting.
Here are some of my observations:
1) The main reason why I did this update is so I can move my wireless router to a more convenient location in my house. After installing the new OS, I moved the router about 15 away from its original location and my 9700 is not grabbing any UMA signals, just like .442 so I had to move the router back. Maybe it's my router but I was under the impression that this new OS can grab a signal that's farther than the older OS. I wanted to see if I can get UMA signals a block away from my house but it goes to Edge while I am on the drive way. Maybe it's my house or other things but the new OS is not impressive.
2) Furthermore, this OS drains Battery like a baby that's breast feeding that won't let go. I do not talk a lot on the phone and normally wouldn't require a charge for 4-5 days. After installing this OS, my battery indicator is down to 40% after just one day.
3) The lock/unlock/hibernate problem people are complaining about is actually more convenient but just takes time to get used to something different.
I guess I will be installing another OS soon as this one is not doing what it is supposed to do for me. I normally have to wait longer because I need East Asian language input on my phone for business contacts and those normally takes awhile to come out.

UMA connections are quicker and more stable, but that doesn't magically make the wifi range drastically increase. You'll still need a better router for that. Bear in mind, though, that pretty much NO router is going to give you wifi signals a block from your house, unless it's mounted on the roof, or some other extensive modification is done. Some people have trouble getting their routers working just across the house!
2) You're judging the OS after a day of use. If you've read any posts in the beta OS threads from anyone knowledgeable, you'll know that it takes at least several days for an OS to "settle in." It may sound like nonsense, but it's not. From a technical standpoint, it's like any freshly installed OS; it needs to do first-run setups on apps again, rebuild caches, optimize, download carrier updates, etc. All that takes place in the first few days after you install the OS, so of course it uses more battery then!
3) Now you're just being silly You admit it's more convenient, but you'd still have to 'get used to it' ?
.545 isn't the end-all and be-all of an OS, but it's a stable excellent upgrade from the stock OS. As long as my cr@ppy router isn't bogged down with traffic, UMA is much improved. Battery life is fine, even with heavy use I can get several days out of it. Everyone's experience is different, sure, but you'd have trouble knocking .545 if you actually try it.
