Default Tmo 4g?!

I just read a press release from TMO over at BGR saying that they are in the process of enhancing their 4G network that will bring incredibly fast speeds to us. Apparently much of the northeast (NY, RI) is already up and running, and Boston is only a few weeks away.

Does anyone know if the speeds on the 9700 will be better, or does it have to be a 4G capable phone? If the 9700 isn't, I wonder if RIM will soon be releasing phones that will have better speeds on this HSPA+ network.

RIM can't even get their 3G Berry to work right on T-Mobile. What makes you think they'll be able to get a 4G Berry to work right?

I believe HSPA+ speeds are up to 7.2 Mbps...the 9700 is capable of only 3.6 Mbps so it would not be able to fully take advantage of it.

So far only MAJOR cities have 4G...much like 3G. T-Mo really needs to get with the game and expand their 3G before they can start thinking of 4G.

HSPA+ is more like a 3.5G...apparently the data speeds can be as high as 21Mbps with practical speeds around 7-ish....

The rest would be up to your equipment. The Bold 9700 is only able to handle HSPA up to 3.6Mbps. The HD2 up to 7.2Mbps...I think the limiting factor is the hand-held devices.

If T-Mobile is able to deploy HSPA+ too all their markets quickly (comparatively easy versus rolling out LTE), then this would position them very well against AT&T and Sprint. Depending on how quickly they do it, they could get some boasting against VZW too (depending on their LTE rollout).

Gawain is correct, HSPA+ is essentially just beefed up 3G, with theoretical maximums no where near what LTE can potentially offer. That said, having a mature 3.5G network would put T-Mobile in an excellent position as meaningful 4G rollout from Verizon and AT&T (and possibly even Sprint at this rate) is still at least year, more likely 2-3 years, out.

I'm not talking about the Bold having bad 3G, I'm talking about T-Mo. I'm sorry, but their 3G maps are sad...

You guys are probably in cities or good suburban areas near big cities. Only these places have 3G. As soon as you leave, it drops to EDGE.

I have driven ALL over both NY and PA and had EDGE 80% of the time.

I talked with a customer service rep recently and they said that they will have what will be a 3.5G up everywhere by the end of 2011. Supposedly the towers everywhere will be converted for 3G by the end of this year. Also according to him, by the end of 2011 T-Mobile will offer the fastest speeds over any network. Just what I was told. Can't believe everything though! Fingers will be crossed.

The majority of 3G devices on T-Mobile will benefit from the HSPA+ upgrade. The upgrade will allow better movement of traffic on T-Mobile's network.

I'd like to see TMO light up all towers with 3G. They're so behind on the game. I get excellent 3G coverage in a town of less than 40,000 in population but as soon as leave town to head to work, I'm on EDGE for about 60% of my commute. It's just too bad our 9700 won't be able to enjoy the HSPA+ speeds from what I was told.

Is there anyone out there enjoying the HSPA+ speeds? Fill us in on your enjoyment!

I'd be happy to get from GPRS to EDGE on my 9700 in MY area.

HSPA+ = 4G in T-Mobile's case.

- just a plain old HSPA phone I'm tethering from.

- As far as 3G coverage is concerned I really do hope they turn up all towers in large cities to 3G. It's the cause of nearly all 3G/EDGE handoffs.. and if this is true, that rep would be talking about cities that already have 3G and not *all* of the network because that just isn't going to happen. They have more than a few EDGE towers large cities, and they need to get cracking on removing all of those nasty EDGE-only areas in a 3G city.
