If they do, it'd be doubtful BlackBerry users would be charged less. Thing is, TMO's niche right now is NOT having tiered plans, so if anything were to happen, it probably wouldn't be in the near future...

Well, BB is better in terms of data usage if you compare it to the iPhone. BBs are great to travel with because they use less data to perform the same functions. So, with that logic, then yes, BBs would be better with tiered plans and probably cost you less because they are more conservative with data.
That being said, I agree with Amy. Tiered plans are probably not going to happen with T-Mobile any time soon. I've been reading several articles and experts are saying that they don't think Sprint or T-Mobile will follow in ATT's footsteps. Their networks aren't bogged down so they don't need to limit data usage. Also, they will appeal to lots of customers if they keep unlimited plans.
If T-Mobile knows what's good for them, they will stick with unlimited.

On AT&T most people will save money with the new metered plans and only those using over 2GB will end up paying more. For those using less than 200MB, the monthly charge for mobile data will go down to 15$ and even for those using between 200MB and 2GB, the monthly charge drops to 25$. Given this situation, I highly doubt T-Mobile will be able to keep charging everyone their current flat rates.

I don't see why not, Ikarus. T-Mobile's prices for unlimited are already lower than other carriers' were. In fact, their prices are lower in general for everything. I'm not sure if I see them losing customers over this...
Other companies like Clearwire have come out in support of "unlimited" and decided openly not to follow in ATT's footsteps. I'm curious as to see what T-Mobile will do.

T-Mobile flat rates are still grossly inflated for the amount of data I'm using each month. Unlimited data plans are a good deal only for a small number of heavy users. If I weren't on a grandfathered T-Zones plan, I would be tempted to do the unthinkable and switch to AT&T.

I just read on Engadget that Verizon is soon to follow with tier data plans like AT&T did. It seems July 29th is the date that Big Red will move to tier data. I really hope TMO doesn't follow their footsteps. I'm really happy with my current service with TMO so I'm not going anywhere for a while. We'll see what happens.

it would be great if tmo kept the unlimited plans for all those who want it, but it would be great if they added tiered plans in addition to the unlimited plan, so that i can continue to get new subsidized smartphones without paying the hefty data plans

I like that idea - have both instead of only one and forcing people onto it (like AT&T).

as we move into the realm of devices able to consume loads of data, carriers will do all they can to cut costs, particularly, move towards data packages that are limited. This will help cut down strain on the network and carrier costs and perhaps also offer consumers packages that are cheaper and fit their needs. Lets be honest, most, not all, individuals have no need for unlimited data. With the availability of wifi in most places (work, home, public places, etc.) our data usages via the carrier is often greatly reduced. I understand there are people out there that need unlimited data but ultimately, that number is much smaller when compared to those not requiring unlimited data.
Eventually, all carriers will offer tiered data plans. This is the place where it is headed. For the carriers and for most consumers, it is a good thing. I can say this through first hand experience. Nowadays, carriers are emphasizing data devices rather than regular phones since the additional services they add on bring forth extra revenue. Every carrier is focused on offering the biggest, most bad *** smart phone out there. It is a war zone.
On the other hand, there are a ton of consumers who want these smart phones without paying for those extra data services you are obligated to take (trust me, i see this everyday). Most people here will argue otherwise: "oh, why would you get a smartphone if you dont want a data plan", but this is not how it goes. While the geeks shunned at&t for switching to tiered plans ($15/$25), normal folks were ecstatic to be able to get an iphone or a bb for just a $15 data plan instead of $30. They have no need for it, they just want to flash around and show off their expensive data device. This is the state of many consumers in the wireless field.
My point: tiered data plans are coming, whether you like it our not, since they benefit most consumers and cut carrier costs. Carriers will NOT offer tiered and unlimited plans at the same time. It will just contradict their cost conserving model of doing their business. After all, wireless carriers are not not-for-profit organizations. They are here to make money, off of you and I.
On the other hand, I am glad i have my BB BIS plan for 19.99, which i have had for the past 5 years and is UNLIMITED!, and it will take **** for tmo to take that away from me lol.

It's unlimited- correct but once you hit 5Gigs they start to throttle your speeds back.

Actually, it's 10GB. It may be 5GB for the newer plans but for the older plans, it's 10GB before you get throttled, if you ever do...

That's with occasional mobile hotspot usage on my N1, yes my BB data plan works great with my N1 (i switch between that and my 9700), internet browsing on 3G, reading MMA and other news, personal and work email, and using many other data intensive applications. Lets be honest, unless you are doing a ton of tethering and downloading videos, torrents, etc. most people will NOT even hit close to 1GB.

And not only that, if you do reach the 10GB mark, they dont cap the amount of data, just the data speed. They will limit you to EDGE speeds only.

Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com | they must of changed it, i stopped posting on their forums. Because a customer of 10 years should be grandfathered into the plan they signed with.
and throttling back isn't true unlimited.
