Default To those worried about tethering with T-Mobile (11.06.2010)

I just got off the phone with T-Mobile's BlackBerry tech support (611) and had the following exchange (paraphrased):

Me: Hi, I had heard some rumors that T-Mobile was going to start adding an additional tethering charge for BB users who tether. I use it a lot, and I was curious.

CS: I don't see anything here about that, but hold on one moment.

Me: One of the big reasons I stick with T-Mobile is because they don't add an additional charge for tethering your BlackBerry. Other carriers do, and there's some rumors online that you guys are gonna start charging $14.99.

CS: Well, officially tethering is not a supported service, and any time you call us with questions about it, that's what we'll tell you -- that it's not a supported service. But no, I don't see anything within my realm of tech support that indicates that we'll be charging for that.

ME:

So, there you have it. I mean, unless I hear otherwise, I just asked a first-level Tmo BB support technician who told me no.

Edit: The press release says "Because T-Mobile Terms & Conditions have not permitted tethering in the past, those customers who have configured their device for tethering will receive a message on their handset advising them they will need to add the new add-on feature to continue using their device as a modem." I have gotten no such message yet (and my device is configured to tether like a mofo), but will alert this thread as soon as I do.

Default tethering

What I've read is that they have/will impose is a "soft" limit of 5gb per month with the standard unlimited plan. After that speeds will be limited, but total data will not be. The extra $14.99 will be to keep the data completely unlimited at full speed. There will not be a restriction on tethering, just total bandwidth. Some have complained that they already have this restriction, and go to ~edge speeds after using lots of data.

I'm surprised that someone can get to 5GB so quickly. I tether every time I travel, and even some times @ work (no internet there) and it would take me far many more times than I use (heavy, but almost never streaming video) to get to even 2GB.

It's not hard to reach 5GB when you're watching videos online everyday, not that I do it because it's not fast enough for me when I tether. Some people over do it. I just don't have the patience when all I'm getting is about 1.5 mbps down and about 300 kbps down on my 9700. If it's indeed true that BB users won't get that extra charge, then it's great news.

I've called Tmo a few times, as well as stopped by a couple of local stores, and was told each time that $14.99 is only if I want really unlimited tethering, otherwise it is still free for up to 5 gig.

I think BB users tend not to use a lot of data and free tethering was a wanted feature so I think they should be able to do it for free.

Haha and this is coming from an android user

There are not many details surrounding this question other than the press release that was quoted earlier in this thread. Even at the store level, which is where i work, we have heard about this, but have not heard a rollout date yet for when this may be happening...and there is not much clarification on the exact parameters of the plan....YET...

The launch of the plan was delayed, and it will come "in time for the holidays". The tethering plan will not apply to BBs at all, as far as I can tell from the details we were given. Only Android devices.

Just called another representative with T-Mobile's Level 1 BlackBerry support (in case word had spread) and she said that as far as she knew there were no plans to start charging BlackBerry users to tether, but that it will remain an unsupported service on BB.

This is the second level 1 tech I've spoken with that has said this. I don't know where you guys are getting your information, but from what I can piece together (with a nod to NorrisCell), the $14.99 tethering plan rollout has been pushed back but will be here before the holidays, and will likely only affect Android users (probably specifically the G2 and MyTouch 4G). The BGR press release really released a crapstorm of misinformation.

I'm going to stop my tethering when it does arrive until I receive confirmation from other customers (android) that they can tether with root and have no problems. If tmobile is looking for tether activity somehow, I don't want to get slapped with the fee.

That's funny. There is no level 1 Blackberry support at T-Mobile. All PDA, Android, and Blackberry tech are level 3 support.

So... Has anyone gotten their bill since this change? Any new charges that you didn't have before because of this?
