| | text message record
Hello,
Does T-mobile keep a record of text messages sent and received in an archive?
I need to get an info from an SMS that I received a few weeks ago.
I called T-mobile and they said they don't have it or won't release it, even to the owner of the account. Is that true? Or is there a way that I can get that info?
Thanks in advance.

In no way would you be able to get those records as a consumer. I am not sure of T-Mobile, but I know text messages aren't archived longer than 4 days for Verizon, and after 4 days they are wiped from the general servers. I know that sensitive information like that can only be gotten through subpoena or if you are a law enforcement officer.

they are only available through court order like stated above. the problem is that people can pretend to be you, with all your information.
its probably easier to contact the person who sent it and ask them for the information then it is to complain that you cant recover the message.

Call them and ask them for your text messages for a certain time period, and they will send it to you VIA snail mail. It will be in paper form, and might take a few weeks to get to you, but at this point im sure it would be worth the wait.

To the OP, I did a little research, and according to what I found, T-mobile does not store the contents of text messages. They are held on the server until delivered, then they are purged. Even with a court order or search warrant, they have no way of accessing or retrieving the content of the messages.
This was true as of a year ago...they may have changed their policies since then.

This was true as of a year ago...they may have changed their policies since then. | I know this is not true because last February there was a case where i live in which an individual was sending threatening text messages to another civilian. The text messages alone were not the significant thing that happened, it was actually when he had assaulted the civilian that made them even more relevant. We contacted TMO about the text messages because civilian had saved some, but not all and we were able to get the remaining text messages in question from them. I know from experience they do have them, but of every provider, Sprint easily provides the best service of obtaining text messages if needed.

I think the government would do something with early termination fee's before they made archiving text messages illegal ESPECIALLY when they could prove vital in a court case.

Sprint retains SMS content for 14 days, too.
Also, the information about the date/time a text was sent, it's length, and who it was sent to/from are retained for a very long time.

It'll happen, it's already in state courts.

It'll happen, it's already in state courts. | It has only gone to state courts in select states, however, I doubt it will pass. The idea of monitoring private messages would be a direct violation of privacy laws already set in place.
Though it is the government, and they are outside watching your house as we speak.
